Thank you tom2238, I had forgotten about that tweak. I just tried it with my 3.2.2 system but I still ended up with the Connection Failed error after I added the password for the wifi connection. Before I added the password I got nothing.

donald I am not aware of any non protected wireless networks around here.

With the old version of Porteus that connects I am unable to run Desktop files. Clicking on them simply displays them. I ran a chmod +x command on them but no change. Properties shows them as being executable by guest. The Choose Application window shows an Associated App as Leafpad but nothing for Execute. How do I add Execute as an Associated App? Or how do I delete the Leafpad association?

hi, Ed_P this tool is part of slackware so you can make a xzm package if you wish and the other is wicd but need avahi and other, also wicd is part of slackware but in extra directory not the /n

wireless.kernel.org uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.wiki.kernel.org, wiki.kernel.org Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN 

Also the old Dell is x86 not x86_64 so the app wouldn't work on it. It should work on my notebook though.

I thought you could do this test with your own wifi AP
Only for a test of course - I have read that some driver/firmware
combinations can not handle WPA but can connect to an open (unsecured) wifi.

3.0.1 RazorQT. Amazing that wifi works on it but not on 3.2.2 or 4.0.

hi, Ed_P with lsmod you can see if the module of your wireless device is loaded, To check if the driver for your card has been loaded, check the output of the lspci -k ,if this is ok you have a name like this:

your wireless device name start always with w not eth if you have a name with ip link try to set up:ip link set wlan0 up ,to check if is up:ip link show wlan0
To see what access points are available:
# iw dev interface scan | less


Depending on the encryption, you need to associate your wireless device with the access point to use and pass the encryption key:

No encryption

# iw dev interface connect "your_essid"

WEP
using a hexadecimal or ASCII key (the format is distinguished automatically, because a WEP key has a fixed length):

# iw dev interface connect "your_essid" key 0:your_key

using a hexadecimal or ASCII key, specifying the third set up key as default (keys are counted from zero, four are possible):

# iw dev interface connect "your_essid" key d:2:your_key

Regardless of the method used, you can check if you have associated successfully:

# iw dev interface link
that is +- all..if the wifi card of laptop do not connect you maybe can use a usb wifi dongle.
