Ok, so I made a bootable USB of both 3.2.2 and 4 (cinnamon desk.)
After booting up using either graphical or fresh selects I select the installer so I can try out this distro on a HD, but a password box pops up asking for a password.
Seriously?
Why is this so ? Do I have to join a secret handshake club to even give this distro a glance?
I wonder how many ppl this has happened to, and there silent response was, ok....moving on.
Hopefully you provide a password here where others can search and find the answer aswell.
Thank you for your time,
Secretsam

This the password prompt you are seeing? https://postimg.cc/image/rdo9l8efp/
You're seeing this for both 3.2.2 and 4.0rc4?

Ed_P, I think he means the root password prompt that pops up when using the Porteus Installer from the menu.
secretsam, if that is the case, Porteus Installer needs admin (root) access for it to function and hence prompts for a password. The default root password for porteus in both v3.2.2 as well as in v4.0 is toor. You can change this after installation from Porteus Settings Center -> Security Settings -> Porteus Password.

Ed_P, no that is not the screen I am seeing. I believe jassouza has it right.
I will give it another go, thank you both for your time.
But may I ask this question.....Why on Earth did you choose 'toor' as the default Root password?
Are you trying to protect people from themselves? lol
Seriously, its not very intuitive or logical...

Five years on, it's still asking for a password. Which I will never remember at the moment when I need this troubleshooting tool. So, sad to say, I'm removing it from the USB drive. It's a shame - looks like a nice distro.

You want the root account being unprotected? Really?
When the simple reverse of the username as password is too hard for you, consider any flavour of Linux being too hard for you as well, even Ubuntu.

Cheers!
