wifi works, connections are not dropped, sound doesn't work, and sometimes signing on after opening the lid the password entry doesn't show but apparently it is being accepted.

hi Ed_P you have to see in settings Session and Startup, application autostart if pulseaudio is enabled at login or you can enable starting the rc.pulseudio deamon in terminal

Ed_P,
Open pulse audio volume control and check whether , "Builtin analog stereo sound" is listed under output and input. If you find "Dummy Output" listed under output,
open terminal;
give command, "pulseaudio -k"
check if output 'dummy output' changed to 'builtin analog'
If you have connected speakers thro' the 1/8 in audio socket, change output from head phones to speakers. wow...
cheers.

Thank you raja.
Opening the Sound Settings shows the Device as Dummy Output. After running the "pulseaudio -k" command the Sound Settings Device shows two Dummy Output devices. I'm running Porteus on a notebook which has built in speakers.

This shows something is preventing selecting your sound card as output.
Normally, killing pulseaudio restores the "default" sound card.
Try once after killing pulseaudio, wait and issue ".pulseaudio --start" command . check pulse audio volume control. Porteus comes with "pavucontrol". look for it in 'sound/video'.
Also try choosing "all input devices" in input.
If you succeed ok or boot only with "base" and eliminate the the trouble creator

"pulseaudio -k" and "pulseaudio --start" yield the same results as before.
Sound & Video show: Audacious, Celluloid, mvp Media Player. No "pavucontrol".
Added in 3 minutes 25 seconds:
New 5.16.14 problem. Mouse pointer doesn't move on Tightvnc's vncviewer app.

@Ed_P
You suspect that your trouble depends on the kernel.
It is recommended that you build your own kernel.
You can easily do this with the "Kernel Builder" tool.
You can also change the configuration as needed.
So you can distinguish the cause of the trouble generated from the kernel or something else.
Thanks.

Thanks neko. I think some of the problems are 001* and 002* module related too. As for building a customized kernel I think it may be a bit over my head.
