manjaro or ubuntu

For sure my preference is to porteus. With all its pros and cons. As man wrote, a well known humanist and philosopher, close to the poor and indigent:
I will say if only God did build us a linux distro it would be Porteus! Thank you Lord for Porteus and may this distro recieve the contributions it needs to be around forever...

However, a discussion with a friend of mine brought me to the following question:
If slackware would not exist, would I prefer porteus to be ubuntu or manjaro based? What do you think? All your opionions are welcome, but would be better weighted if you assert that you have tackled these two versions of linux.

Personally, my preference goes to manjaro. It is somewhat more performant and lighter than ubuntu. It ask more skills, but the arch linux documentation is concise and extensive

In addition, porteus lack of pasture would be definitely remediated.

I 2nd that if we are going to change to a new base distro. I hope it is Manjaro base. They keep there package more up-to-date. I have ran Manjaro and Mint live off of a DVD and install a few program and Manjaro was up-to-date or more current.

No, the Sw gets more and more bloated, sloppy coded, inefficient and buggy.

Regression in (flawless) funktionality, and bugs everywhere.

The same goes for kernel versions.
If a kernel x.x supports my hardware, why look for another?

Of course, if one owns really new Hw, you need a recent kernel.
If not, why bother?- you do not expect that the Hw will run faster
because of a newer kernel, do you?

If the system runs well (and does what it should do) i see no reason
to upgrade whatever it may be. -- except for SERIOUS security flaws.

Thats why i don't like rolling releases telling me every day
"there are xxxx package upgrades available".

Also, as long as i can get a distro without systemd I'll take it.
(pulseaudio can also go to /dev/null; what's wrong with alsa?)

^^^ Of same mind as donald, except imperative to upgrade to newest workable release. Quite simply support for older releases fades out, newest release usually brings more features, and finally the interdepenndability of software. Like not being able to work certain sites, unless having javascript or flash etc. More and more sites expecting one to have the latest browsers (e.g capable of playing html5 videos with latest codecs), and latest browsers expecting latest software. Otherwise one falls by the wayside.

IMHO not bleeding edge, but something as close to forefront as stability criteria allow, which normally means an active user base/forum solving issues involving said release, where users have been able to gain sufficient expertise as to be able to mutually help one another.

I am in the same boat as Bogomips and Donald. I think most long time users probably are. Outside of working on Porteus, I just want to sit down and get my work done. I don't care if v5 looks better than v4 and adds a little new functionality. I was already happy getting my work done on v4.

Nothing worse than windows telling me I have to wait for 124 updates before I can use my OS just because I haven't switched it on for two weeks. I also hate when a rolling release updates only to find that the update breaks something. This is one of the reasons I like Slackware.

For me, the OS for me is just the driver's seat. If I can reach everything I need from the drivers seat comfortably without taking my eyes off the road then I am happy. Ubuntu probably beats arch for hardware compatibility and software availability in this regard. I am not well versed in Ubuntu so I would have a little to learn but from what I can tell it is more user friendly for GUI users.

What good for you brokenman is that Slackware you build a working OS and use it. Then when you want to update it later you build another working OS.

And you are right about what you wrote. Hope you stay with Slackware.

I guess for me manjaro. It was one of the last distros I played with before I discovered Porteus ( or rediscovered Slax?).

Concerning the apt-get package manager, we are many to have worked with it. We will help for sure. But I suspect that you are going to catch it very fast.

No, the wrapper simply calls the real package manager to do the work, then does its own thing once it finishes.

It may be possible but not something I would tackle with my limited time.

I think that the most essential of Porteus is the small size.

When Arch or Ubuntu will be applied to Porteus,
it might not be appropriate to employ an original package manager (pacman or apt/dpkg) directly.

But on the case that the reason of applying other distro to Porteus is to use its package manager,
it might be better to use original distro.
