My new go to Linux OS

When the hard drive on my laptop broke. I was looking for an OS I could run off one of my many spare thumb drives. I tried dozens of different linux builds. I eventually settled with Mint but got tired of it freezing constantly. Porteus was the solution for my problem. It was very light weight , easy to install and doesn't freeze up like other linux builds. Good job keep up the good work.

Aye , count me in. I have like 20 different thumb drives. I used Porteus to restore my HDD by nuking it. However I only use Windows to play one game other than that I'm on Linux.

Porteus is amazing because of its concept, almost mindblowing.

Size, ability to run from RAM and modular structure are the only things that together make it float, other sides of Porteus are worse than those of more popular OSes - software library, user base, accessibility, visual appeal, name.

Porteus will have its userbase until other small modular RAM OSes will emerge. If they will emerge, then only constant imroving of all sides of Porteus will keep it alive. Another good move would be to merge Porteus with some other distro(s) and increase its user base along with other aspects.

There was some discussion with a vote a year or so ago. The result was to stay with slackware, mainly for its stability, but also because forum members were fans of that distribution:

About your other critics, if you would turn them into positive suggestions or actions to be implemented that would keep with the kiss philosophy and small size resulting distribution, you should be more than welcome. Even suggesting another distribution or basis for packages.

IMHO you have left out the most important thing, which determines whether an enterprise floats or sinks, and that is the attitude of the developers to the users. Was on tinycore, on chakra, and always efforts to help, just by providing information, were spurned by the developers, or they did not recognise how useful the info provided could be to the other users, or they were too snooty. Different here. We help, they appreciate.

Taking what Bogomips has said, what matters to me as a user and to every other user is the end result, not the people who work on it and their attitudes and their intentions (i think Putin had said something like this).

The end result is quite good, with Porteus i can browse internet, watch live video streams, watch youtube and porn sites, play webm, use 4chan and 2ch (russian imageboard), play NES, SNES, GBA, PSX and other consoles and games via Retroarch, download torrents, and many more stuff that i dont do.

And a couple suggestions:

1.Reworked USM - it should be looking like the Ubuntu Software Center or Apple Appstore - pictures, big selection of software, newest versions of web browsers, all major open source apps (editors, players, indie video games), tools to play closed source video games, flash players for all browsers, maybe drivers and other system software to support the majority of PCs. It should look neat, with categories, download count, pictures. One repository, one.
2. Eye candy for OS. OS should have a flashy wrap, like Elementary OS. Geeks will change anything they want anyway, initial look should be the one and only for all users. Single DE, single iso file, single web browser. Then devs could put all their effort towards the single vanilla iso file, and it will be much better than constructed iso files.
3. No Duck Duck Go extensions or any unnecessary modifications of open source software. This gives adware vibe to the Porteus.
