It's not that people aren't smart about making backups, but sometimes folks don't have that thought process when it comes to computers and are oblivious that drives do die and accidents can happen. For example, my dad who is 85 years old didn't have a clue or even think to backup his hard drive full of photos until I warned about the possible loss of those files if they weren't backed up in the event of catastrophic hard drive failure. I showed him how to make backups of his photos and now he not only knows how and understand the importance of backing up his irreplaceable files.
