Installing Java -How If One Can?
Installing Java -How If One Can?
Greetings:
What's the best method for installing Java as I've run into sites that won't proceed until you install it. USM files give no hint.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: Installing Java -How If One Can?
You can install OpenJDK (The Open Source equivalent of Oracle's Java JRE) using Porteus Unified Package Manager
If you want to install the Official Java package you can read this
https://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml
I will give you more info as soon as I will try to install it on my porteus as well. I've done it before so I know how to do but, you know, a little revising is harmless

Re: Installing Java -How If One Can?
I make this tutorial for java oracle (source closed)
viewtopic.php?f=75&t=3332
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
or download alienbob txz package openjre (opensource)
for 32bit (download openjre txz)
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... g/current/
for 64bit (download openjre txz)
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... 4/current/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you download alienbob openjre you need icedtea java plugin
for 32bit (download txz)
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... g/current/
for 64bit (download txz)
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... 4/current/
txz is a slackware package you need convert to xzm porteus module and activate.
Pay attention if you have activate CUPS package or have activate printing module for work java.

Re: Installing Java -How If One Can?
Hey Slaxmax, I've used your process to create a 8u31 module but I am having problems with this link: http://www.javagameplay.com/th.html and either of the two java links it points to. I've added the host's URL to the Java Exception Site List but still a no go. Any suggestions?

Hi Ed_P
Please verify your java version
here: https://www.java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp
I have installed java 8u31 and my internet banking works fine (needed java). I use firefox only.
I tested http://www.javagameplay.com/th.html, but does not work. Show ClassFormatError.
Please post your feedback (errors).

Greetings!
Thanks to you all! You folks have handed me an education and a half! If this non-techie can sweat through making it, I'm donating the Java module to the Porteus archives so that other newbies don't have to get burned by trial by fire just to use a new OS too!

@jimwg
And if you are not able to do it, francois will be able to show you how to make one giant module with USM, out of them all, so I believe, for us all.

Re: Installing Java -How If One Can?
Merging would be a good idea, but I do not find brokenmans merge script with updatedb and locate merge commands.
But by putting them in the same folder java-for-web, in the /porteus/module folder it should be enough.
There might be a problem with the porteus 3.1 firefox version. It would be obsolete by a more recent version. See:
viewtopic.php?f=117&t=4346

Re: Installing Java -How If One Can?
It might look hard but this is easy. There is one package to remove and three to add. There are two methods:
Prerequisite: deactivate and remove 004-firefox.xm.
1) easy solution: use usm gui do download and convert mozilla-firefox-31.4, openjre (or openjdk), rhino and icedtea-web. They will be in the /tmp/usm folder.
2) Or if you prefer working from slackware packages, convert and activate them:
- firefox most recent version:
32 bit:
http://pkgs.org/slackware-14.1/salix-i4 ... /download/
64 bit:
http://pkgs.org/slackware-14.1/salix-x8 ... /download/
- Jdk (jre, does not work):
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/openjdk/
rhino dependency:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/rhino/
icedtea:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... edtea-web/
Test java here from within firefox:
http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Report on what is difficult for you. We will be glad to help.

Re: Installing Java -How If One Can?
So many helpers and no-one can help? See last my post here: http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... 6&start=15
If it doesn't help you, I can create for you java module, but tell me what porteus version you use, i486 or x86_64.
