A lot of questions...
1) How was Porteus Built? I know it is similar to Slax wich is based on slackware and uses a customised version of the linux-live scripts that are used to build slax. However which steps take to build a Porteus distro from scrath? Can you write here the steps that you take to make a Porteus iso? Eg:
1. Installing Slackware only installing package1, package2, package3...
2. Building kernel from suources patched with aufs...
3. Removing useless files such as /usr/share/doc/foo/...
4 Extracting Porteus Linux Live Scripts (provide download link with a changelog)...
Don't worry I'm not going to create a brand new linux distro based on porteus. I just want to sodisfy my curiosity.
2) Do you use Porteus as main system?
3) Why did you use slackware as base?
You use slackware as base because of the way it works, it's very flexible, you can install a package in a subdirectory without problems. If you used debian as base making modules would have been more difficult because the way that distro works is more complex and makes it an hassle to create modules
4) Whould you recommend to a newbie to use Slackware? Why?
5) How do you deal with the lack of software in Slackware compared to Debian or Ubuntu? (I already know about SlackBuilds, alien packages, etc)
compile every software from source..?
Please don't blame me for these (maybe stupid) questions. I hope to get some replies, especially from the admins of the project

@Michele13
There was a post not too long ago, where your questions were partly answered by Brokenman. Bookmarked the topic, but just now when I went to get it for you, it seems to have disappeared. So look thorough the posts from about a month ago, and if you find it let me know
EDIT: Found the post

Re: A lot of questions...
Thanks Bogomips for the answer, these are things that I already knew, like right now I'm tweaking with kernel sources, I've patched (maybe unsuccessfully) the linux-3.18.1 kernel source with aufs. However the buld process fails...Bogomips wrote:@Michele13

EDIT: Found the post
I've downloaded a zip file of this branch...
http://sourceforge.net/p/aufs/aufs3-sta ... 3.18/tree/
Maybe I should have sticked with the version 3.18 of the kernel instead of using the version 3.18.1. I've used this gude
http://www.porteus.org/component/conten ... ernel.html
How do i install the modules and the firmware in a separate directory? (I will make a module from that folder)
EDIT:
I downloaded the kernel 3.18 and patched it with aufs. Now I get this error:
Code: Select all
ld: link finale non riuscito: Memoria esaurita

Re: A lot of questions...
Explaining in detail is something I don't have the time nor desire to do. People that want to build Porteus need to be able to troubleshoot and also work things out for themselves, Otherwise they will always be back asking questions.
I will add that Fanthom is responsible for building the core of what makes Porteus what it is. I have built my own core modules many times but there is really not many situations where you need to do this.
I think your question should not be how you can build porteus, but how you can build a desktop environment on top of Porteus, or how you can add something to help improve porteus.
1) How was Porteus Built?
Install the slackware packages into a temporary folder.
Add additional custom Porteus files
Run a script to strip unrequired files, fix permissions etc.
Packages for each mdule can be foud in /var/log/packages
2) Do you use Porteus as main system?
Yes
3) Why did you use slackware as base?
In my opinion, stability.
4) Whould you recommend to a newbie to use Slackware? Why?
It really depends on the individual motives of the user.
5) How do you deal with the lack of software in Slackware compared to Debian or Ubuntu
We have a package manager that gives a selection from 5 differet repositories. Personally I have never had a need for anything more than that. If I do I compile it from source.
I hope this answers some of your queries.

How do i become super user?

Re: A lot of questions...
Also, why did you remove LXDE and RazorQT in favor of LXQT?

Re: A lot of questions...
Ok, now I will try to compile Enlightenment from source, let's see what happens, but first let's get the dependencies!

Re: A lot of questions...
2) Do you use Porteus as main system?
Yes, I do. Windows is out. It is simple when you get the basic functioning of porteus modular system. It has a small electronic fingerprint, takes very few space on the linux box. It's the fastest os in the west, the east, the north and the south.
3) Why did you use slackware as base?
Slackware is very reliable.
If you used debian as base making modules would have been more difficult because the way that distro works is more complex and makes it an hassle to create modules
other linux distributions packages translating to modules for porteus:
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=4074
debian or archlinux could function with modules too, and there has been some effort to port packages of other distributions to porteus:
arch:
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... 6&start=30
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... 8&start=15
debian:

http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=114&t=3511

4) Would you recommend to a newbie to use Slackware? Why?
As with all os, there is some adaptation with porteus (slackware derivative), slackware per se is more complicated to deal with. With its modular approach, the simplicity of usm the package manager of porteus, the fit to your need porteus downloader (web wizard: http://build.porteus.org/), and the eagerness of forum members to support, porteus should be a distribution of choice. There is willingness to provide this distribution to newcomers, though we paradoxically got the nerds distribution tag in some circles.
5)How do you deal with the lack of software in Slackware compared to Debian or Ubuntu? (I already know about SlackBuilds, alien packages, etc)
compile every software from soit ce..?
Building from source is the main way to do it with slack.build. To do so, minimally, you need the devel.xzm package. However, with more simple packages, it is possible to transform .deb or .rpm into porteus xzm, given that the dependencies are available, best thing is to use slackware packages to provide dependencies and libraries. Running the converted package and looking into the prerequisites in the source package, is of good help to build from .deb and .rpm packages. See 3) for additional info on this topic.

Re: A lot of questions...
-Can I ask questions about slackware in this forum?
- Where can I find additional modules for porteus other then this forum? (Sorry for the dummy questions, I'm trying to make a sort of FAQ for Porteus users in this thread. Use it if you wish)

@ Michele13
Porteus-apps.org is an un-official public repository for Porteus Linux xzm modules.
use it at your own risk
