Porteus 3.1rc feedback

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Correct. Just checked KDE usm packages requirement. Hasn't changed. Ran on KDE

Code: Select all

loop3     7:3    0    66M  0 loop /mnt/live/memory/images/003-kde.xzm
loop4     7:4    0   528K  0 loop /mnt/live/memory/images/sudo-1.8.9p5-i486-1.xzm
loop5     7:5    0     5M  1 loop /mnt/live/memory/images/flashplayer-plugin-11.2.202.411-i3
loop6     7:6    0  35.9M  1 loop /mnt/live/memory/images/VLC_191014.xzm
loop7     7:7    0    60K  1 loop /mnt/live/memory/images/gtk-ch_161014.xzm
loop8     7:8    0  16.3M  1 loop /mnt/live/memory/images/Kate_211014.xzm
loop9     7:9    0  29.6M  1 loop /mnt/live/memory/images/ImM_180914.xzm

guest@porteus:~$ display
display: color is not known to server `FOREGROUND': Success @ error/xwindow.c/XGetPixelPacket/3064.
Got same error when running KDE xzm :sorry: under Mate. Documented in previous post.

Edit: Also ran KDE xzm under lxqt and xfce with display displaying. :) (Both usm one and very latest version from Arch worked.)

i'm talking about color scheme included in porteus.cfg
OK, found a way to test this but don't see the problem in LXQt i486 version. I also don't see the quoted text, I see "Porteus-v3.1 32bit". Need more information to continue testing.

@sean
Hoping to have it finished Friday sometime, I hope that's okay?
we still have two weeks to final so even late fixes are ok

I'm duplicating as close as possible the panel main menu, so the right-click menu should be identical to going through the main menu.
it wont be possible to create this menu 'on the fly' upon desktop startup? i prefer to have it dynamic but if this is not an option then static is also ok.

If time permits me, I may add a few immediate (one click) choices from the right-click menu. On my own system I have one click access to a Terminal, PCManFM, and Geany text editor. Then I have a sub-heading "For Experts Only" (really as though I'm one :-), there I have a Super User Mode Terminal, PCManFM, and Editor.
sounds good

Clicking on the main menu/System Tools/Super User Mode - PCManFM brings up a dbus-launch dialog box asking for the root password, I enter toor, the dialog box vanishes and that's it.
worked here but only once. must be related to that 'dbus' command - will double check

thanks for provided menu.xml - will merge it with a tree over the weekend and check if it works.

@Ed_P
must have mixed up something on my side. downloaded ISO from porteus server and color scheme is perfectly ok. we can cross this one off from the list.

thanks

Ok.

FWIW The color ff00ff is transparent in a webpage, that may hold true for Linux also. If so the "menu color title" line in the porteus.cfg file might work well with "#ffF6FF00 #ffff00ff none" or "ffF6FF00 #00000000 none" rather than the current "#ffF6FF00 #30003f07 none".

    will go with "ffF6FF00 #00000000 none" which looks better than pink :)

        brokenman, you experienced same problem before
        brokenman wrote:Indeed. It worked for me under xfce and lxqt (didn't try mate) but failed under KDE.

        Here is the offending code in the source xwindow.c:

        Code: Select all

         3056  /*
        3057  Set border color.
        3058  */
        3059  (void) XParseColor(display,colormap,(char *) BorderColor,
        3060  &pixel->border_color);
        3061  status=XParseColor(display,colormap,resource_info->border_color,
        3062  &pixel->border_color);
        3063  if (status == False)
        3064  ThrowXWindowException(XServerError,"ColorIsNotKnownToServer",
        3065  resource_info->border_color);
        3066  pixel->border_color.pixel=XStandardPixel(map_info,&pixel->border_color);
        3067  pixel->border_color.flags=(char) (DoRed | DoGreen | DoBlue);
        It appears to be directly related to drawing the window border. The border color is set on line 3059 then the window exception is thrown on 3064.

        I tried changing theme (sometimes the oxzgen theme is responsible for snags) but to no avail. Ran out of time.
        There must have been something that's changed for it to disappear for you on KDE.

        Found it!

        In mate 32bit fresh mode I loaded only the following modules: fftw, lcms2 and imagemagick
        I then copied only the file /usr/bin/cpp from the package: gcc-4.8.2-i486-1

        Now you need to logout and log back in and it works.

        So essentially after using USM to download the required modules, you will need to logout and back in for it to work.

        Code: Select all

        root@porteus:/tmp/un# ls -1 /mnt/live/memory/images/
        000-kernel.xzm/
        001-core.xzm/
        002-xorg.xzm/
        003-mate.xzm/
        04-firefox.xzm/
        Please try for KDE.
        How do i become super user?

        @r004
        this is a known bug with udisks2 which protects MBR of the stick somehow. you have to mount the stick manually and not through the udisk2:

        Code: Select all

        mkdir /tmp/usb
        mount /dev/sdXY /tmp/usb
        cd /tmp/usb/boot
        sh Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com
        that should work
        Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

        RE: LXQt-32bit, Porteus 3.1-rc2

        @fanthom

        You said: "it wont be possible to create this menu 'on the fly' upon desktop startup? i prefer to have it dynamic but if this is not an option then static is also ok."

        fanthom, "dynamic" is way over my head, sorry. Actually, to this date, no distro, to my knowledge, has been able to make such a process "dynamic" in any "lxde" distribution. I will continue to be installing as many current LXQt based distro's as possible in the very near future, in my effort to analyze and assist you and the Porteus developers.

        I see there is still some time, and if it permits me, I can add those extra single click apps to the menu.xml.

        @brokenman

        RE: Mate-32bit, Porteus 3.1-rc2

        Do you wish to have each of these under Applications/Accessories?:

        Find files & directories
        Search for files

        Then also, "galculator" in not opening:

        Code: Select all

        guest@porteus:~$ galculator
        galculator: error while loading shared libraries: libquadmath.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
        @ncmprhnsbl

        Thanks for the kind comment about the menu :-)

        :D Actually not that much. 2" at most, so far. And today it's raining.

        (on topic)

        I really like the 3.1 boot cfg wallpaper. And it looks really nice with LXQt. Booting to LXQt with a version of it without the banner on the bottom as the wallpaper would be very impressive imo. You guys should consider it.
