Windows DNS registration

Here you can post about the issues related to modifications performed manually (not through the kiosk wizard). Example: swapped kernel, added 3rd party modules or files.
Please describe in detail what has been changed and hopefully other kiosk user will be able to help.
Porteus team wont resolve bugs posted in this category as we support only modifications made by the kiosk wizard.

Windows DNS registration

Post#1 by rh102801 » 03 Jul 2014, 19:27

I am considering the idea of having the kiosks automatically register with DNS (Windows 2008). I have done some google searches and came up with the following: ... ndows-dns/

Basically we are already doing this with Windows machines but it would be extremely helpful to be able to do this with the porteus kiosks without having to assign a static IP address and manually registering them in DNS so I can resolve the IPs by hostname.

Be use the kiosk for an in house web based application for employees to clock in and out. Everything works as it should except for the hostname column of our program which is left blank as a reverse lookup to the IP does not give us the hostname (or fully qualified domain name). I am good with the DNS changes on the server but am trying to figure out what customizations I need to do on the kiosk for this functionality to work. I have found several examples for different Linux versions but none for Slackware so I am not sure what files would correspond to it or if the changes would be the same from the article.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
