I have been fiddling around with this for a few nights unsuccessfully.
I am clearly not understanding some very basic things here.... I am not sure if I understand how to properly install a stack?
blocked once again by a missing dependency (libQtSql.so.4 this time)

This is what you shuld do:
-download the packages from the given link,
-I guess you dont have libQtSql on xface (I have it in kde4), so you have to download and install qt4 (libQtSql is part of qt4); try downloading it from PPM,
-move all modules to modules,
-activate them by clicking on each of them (or by rebooting),
-start qgis by opening a console and typing "qgis" (with no quotes).
