Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Francois - I edited the porteus.cfg file to make sure that it this usb can only be booted in "always fresh" mode and as guest user. Also set it to boot into ram to speed things up. Looking good so far. Merci

I can confirm that the steps reported by ncmprhnsbl here.
When I ran the script Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com from the default location that the USB key was mounted (/run/media/...) , it failed.
When I unmounted, then remounted at /mnt/sdb1 it worked.
This was on ArchLinux. My USB key is formatted FAT32

There are differences by which porteus mounts the usb key compared to other distributions. This is what ncmprhnsbl has pointed out by refering to the faq.
