@cchuang
please do 2 things:

a) un-blacklist 'b43' driver and blacklist 'wl' as per this HOWTO:
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1099

b) compile b43-fwcutter (takes only couple of seconds) and extract proprietary firmware as per:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri ... 3#firmware

let us know if you managed to do it.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Err...

I do not come every day in Porteus forum, however I was wondering:
It seems that you are going to push porteus 2.1 to final ?
How do we know that bugs are corrected ? May be you would create a 2.1.x release ? :lol:
I am astonished that a RC3 will not exist when we all know that MATE needs to be heavily tested... at least.

I suppose that you don't need my rpm2xzm ? :lol: (I would like people to test mine with RC3)

And what about my discuss the other day about firewall ? I do not put SOLVED because it is not solved in my point of view...
My firewall here is based on the original from porteus but I've made many changes so everyone could put whatever they want basically.
(Easy to tweak)
I suppose that you don't need that too... :lol:

Let's see tomorrow how Porteus 2.1 final will be :twisted:
I will make many changes again. few... :lol:

N.B: Of course it's your distro and we all respect that.

PS: I would try to read here this night...
I like Slackware so I tried Porteus...

@kadalka
a) no plans for rc3 or 2.1.x - we have also a real life.
b) too late for inclusion in 2.1 but you can post fixes/patches so they may get to next release
c) it's not my distro
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

@brokenman
May be next month, I will upload the 'porteus-package-manager' modified for Japanese on the thread "32bit Porteus v2.0 + FVWM(Austrumi like) and minimized" of "Community effort"

But it can not be an Porteus official version directly. It is an mere test sample. You may understand the reason, if you check /linuxrc and /functions included in /boot/syslinux/initrd.xz included in lxde_fvwm_ja1.iso already uploaded on that thread.

The 'linuxrc and functions' were rewritten from original 'linuxrc' in order to translate '/boot/docs/cheatcodes.txt' into Japanese version '/boot/docs/cheatcodes-ja.txt' included in the lxde_fvwm_ja1.iso. The 'linuxrc and functions' are mere test samples.

@rava -- btw, I added 'gifsicle' so making animated gifs with mtpaint should work for you in 2.1 final.

@donald -- we did a lot of work on how automounting works in 2.1 final. Drives will now be mounted in /mnt instead of /run/media/$USER. I was hoping this change would bear on your issue and make it simpler to resolve it but in the end we're still using udisks2 to implement the mount command, and that sends it back through polkit and the whole chain of events. We were reluctant to remove guest from "plugdev" because we didn't want to create bugs somewhere else with our final release, but I'd like to keep working on this so we can get it right going forward and maybe push an update to resolve this or at least an optional module for those who want to restrict guest from mounting/unmounting.

For now, try the following:
1) remove guest from plugdev per my instructions on page 7 of this thread, like you did previously. This will make it so guest cannot unmount drives mounted by root.
2) edit /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks2.policy. For each udisks action that looks relevant, such as mounting/unmounting, change this line:

Code: Select all

<allow_active>auth_admin_keep</allow_active>
to look like this:

Code: Select all

<allow_active>auth_admin</allow_active>
"auth_admin_keep" means that once you enter the root password, the authorization is stored for a while. With this change, guest will have to enter the root password for every action.
3) edit /etc/fstab. For any drive you don't want to appear with an icon in thunar, remove 'comment=x-gvfs-show' from its mount options, and it will dissapear. this one will be a little harder to make persistent because fstab is generated on the fly for every boot even if you save your changes. You'll probably want to disable /etc/rc.d/init.d/show_gvfs, either by running 'chmod -x' on it or modifying the contents of the script to suit your needs. Finally, comment out this line:

Code: Select all

test -e /lib/udev/rules.d/80-udisks2.rules && MOPT="$MOPT,comment=x-gvfs-show$GVICON"
in /sbin/udev-fstab-update. (This only applies to 2.1 final and later). This will prevent your drives from showing up in the thunar pane, for all users. If you like, I can try to help out with a more customized approach to show some but not other drives. I'll admit that this is a pain.

@Ahau

Thanks a lot for this Howto.

I think I will play with these options and see what will come out.
What I've written, in my previous posts, was my ideal vision.
Now I see it a little bit cooler:
It's only important that guest can not mount Partitions,
which are not allowed.(I always have something to Hide)
If guest can unmount Partions, or see an Icon of
Partitions which are not allowed, not as important in practice

Thanks for your work on Porteus.
regards
donald

This is a sticky situation that is relative to the user. It's a tricky balance between a seasoned user that wants to limit things and perhaps has other users on the system, or a complete beginner with no computer knowledge that just wants to plug in there device and copy photos onto it. To be successful I believe a distro has to be both. Out of the box should be set up for the beginner, but still have the flexibility for the advanced user to control all aspects. That's why I love linux.

@brokenman

That's definitly right.
and yes, it's more comfortable for a single user at Home.
Can you remember how it was in 2.0-XFCE?
There were no Drive-Icons in the left-panel of Thunar.
and as it should be, (imho) you had to be root to mount unmount HD-Partitions.
(guest could use a usb-stick).

I know why it is different now.

But as humans are, If they can see that there is a secret Partition,
they try and try and try to somehow get access.....
.....till the whole system is damaged.

never mind....I will take precautions 8)

Here's the sticky wicket -- in Porteus 2.0, the icons weren't there, but the guest user still had the ability to mount or unmount them...it's just that most users wouldn't know how to do it without seeing the icons (udisksctl from the command line). Let us know if you're able to tweak it how you like it and maybe write up a howto, or I can help with a script or something to customize how these are handled.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!
