Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web

Hi burdi01,
the ISO is very old (based on Porteus 4.0, 32 bit), and it works!
But the current version (issue 5/2020) is based now on Porteus 5.0rc1
and this has the strange mistake that I can't explain to myself.

Time to join new porteus ver 5.0 release candidate 2. Porteus is like a good wine, it gets better and tastier with age. It deserves the interest of the linux community.

I am using an Acer Aspire 4732z from 2009 with 1GB RAM and I can't install KDE into my 64GB sd card, which I wanted to make a portable OS. LXDE works fine but I don't like the blue corners of the UI. This distro kinda gives me a headache to install and is not recommended for those who wanted to move from windows to linux. There's even a graphical glitch in the KDE version of Porteus.

I'll wait for another year to reinstall this OS back. Hope they'll improve it someday even more.

I wonder, why is that person not making a free (as in speech and beer) account on the forum and gives us the details so that we can approve.

Many laptops use self-brewed hardware and the company gives SM-Windowser all the info they need, and Linux has to figure out all by ourselves.
It is noit the fault from Linux when a hardware resource claims it can "manage XY at a spd of 80 Whatver" when it only manages that resource at 40 at best. Windows ahem I meant SM-Windowser knows about that and addresses that hardware part as if it only can be bothered with a speed of 40, even when the resource itself claims it can handle double the speed.

This has been like so for ages, and it seems many SM-Windowser user willing to use Linux on older hardware still have not got the memo.

People, we ned detailed bug reports to improve Porteus.

Reading it now; one user only commented on how you can use the P for kiosk, but should the kiosk branch of Port not be a different OS, and have its separate user reply place on https://distrowatch.com
Maybe it is so and the user picked the wrong entry, but maybe there is no entry for port Kiosk. like I knew in advance that the Wikipedia editors will reject the notion of having Port Kiosk as a stand alone wiki entry. I knew because there have been some blockheads who claimed Port is too insignificant to have a Wikipedia entry at all - to that another wiki editor replied with listing Windoze 1.x and 2.x versions all as single wiki pages, when these OS are of no interest to anyone nowadays. To that the nagging wiki editor had no reply.

And Francois, you sure have been correct of how fine some reviews are, like this one goes down like the finest vine:

Not so on porteus. Install something as a module, put in the the modules folder, if it breaks, just delete the module. The rest of the system and modules are magically restored!

Same with the live system. I can run any command on the live system, without any worries of what if this hoses my system?

I know systems like puppy does it too. But Porteus is the only system that is as minimal as puppy or tiny core, but provides much more functionality and looks great too!

Great concept on a great OS. Keep up the good work!

In fact, we should read thoroughly the critiques of porteus on distrowatch. I think it could help us to make it better. One critique is about the installation. Some other is about package installation. Another is about persistence. Manjaro has a message page that you can remove once the system is running, maybe this would be a way to introduce newcomers to the essentials of porteus.

that sounds like a good idea, but the Rava that I am, I suggest a cheat code that disabled that on-first-run-only info box for the advanced and seasoned users.

When we include that option (and I hope we do) we should at least tell the advanced users about the cheatcode.

cons: I miss a photo editor by default. I know, I can creat a module, but that shouldn't be too big to include by default.

I know many people see a graphics editor as essential, and I always boot any of my Porteus with mtPaint. It can do most of the jobs, and for the rest I fire up the GIMP, or use GraphicsMagick (I prefer that to ImageMagick)
Lets make a poll and ask if users on here want an image editor included by default in 5.0 finale version, but put into the optional folder.
mtpaint-3.50.x86_64.xzm is tiny 604 KB! The additional size cannot really be an argument against adding that image editor!

The only downsize of that version is no support for webp images. My fav image viewer Viewnior supports webp when the system supports it, which is why i created 030-webp-pixbuf-loader-20191003.fb04954-x86_64-1_slonly.xzm - 8kB in size. And viewnior not only displays webp images it can also alter and save them without issue, because it used the DE support for all image formats for doing the stuff it does. Not so for mtPaint, sadly. Maybe I ask the recent author of it to include webp support, when you want good quality with low compression and minimal artefacts but small filesize, webp is much superior to jpeg.
One of the few things Gooourgle did 100% right.

I installed 032-webp-pixbuf-loader-20191003.fb04954-x86_64-1_slonly.xzm cause I was told thats what I need so that I can watch webp with Viewnior, maybe there is a slighly larger solution that will support Viewnior and giving me also full load and saving in mtPaint I would go for that.

GIMP not needs anything additional, it can handle all webp even when no other program in the system can watch these.

Why should it not work for Port 5.0rc[12]? It is based on 14.2 Slackware, so it should fit, no?

Some few did not, I thing Graphics Magick and/or blender among the few exceptions, but almost all can be used in 4.0 and 5.0.
