Poll: What's your (other) favorite distro(s)?
Re: Poll: What's your (other) favorite distro(s)?
I voted slackware
I know some people say slackware is difficult I just don't get why they say that
you start off with everything installed whats hard with that
I think the first linux I used was knoppix when that was the thing
then I installed zip slack 9 tried slax and DSL but I stumbled on to puppy
it was good for my hardware at the time but development was out of control chaos
to say it kindly somewhere around 2007 I got tired with the the layers upon layers of
fixes and changes and decided to camp out on one version of puppy and fix it up and make it stable
and went as far as rebuilding every *.pet into standard slackware packages and hacked at slackwares pkgtool and rebuilt the iso with slackware packages even replaced the puppy kernel with slackwares kernel if I would have had any idea how long that was going to take me I probably wouldn't have done it but I guess I was too stubborn once I started I had to finish it
once I got it working it was out dated with slackware 13.37
so I thought to start over again with a slackware 13.37 package list and go for it again
then I stumbled on to Porteus and decided to jump off the merry go round and have some fun programming which is something I wanted to do for a long time but was always so busy compiling packages and fixing things
I can honestly and humbly say you guys here at Porteus are doing a great job
and thanks for letting me be a part of the dev team I will be helping out more in time
I have been working with the guys at BaCon and learning about GTK at the same time
so I am having more fun now and Porteus is my main OS !

I select the other
order as follows
1 porteus
2 slitaz
because it can boot from cd even with size below 180 mb to go to the internet ....
value-added porteus highly modular
sorry for google translate

Re: Poll: What's your (other) favorite distro(s)?
power of Gentoo lies exactly in the compilation and easy modification of the whole system.Tonio wrote:It is just a proof of concept to showcase the power of Gentoo.
without this feature Gentoo is just like any other system (well - maybe a bit faster when compiled with gcc flag 'march=native').
firefox behaves exactly the same on Gentoo and Slackware or any other distro.
only if we decide to switch porteus base to gentoo.but if people request it would you do it?
i dont want to create and maintain another porteus derivative, sorry but i have no time for this.
want to focus on core instead.
Cheers

Surely my first and the best distro is Porteus but I like Puppy. It was my first contact with linux. I must use this distro on USB stick because my wife does not like linux She doesn't know what is the best.
Impossible does not exist!!

Re: Poll: What's your (other) favorite distro(s)?
Hi !
I have answered Ubuntu, because it was simply the first distro to be able to connect to the web thanks to wifi.
It was hard to give an answer, because in my workshop I have 5 computers all bred with Linux, a 2009 PC fitted with a 1 Tb disk where at least 10 distros are living, a server running currently with Porteus but able to restart with one of the 20 disks where I can have : Mandriva, Mageia, Open Suse, Fedora, Knoppix, Puppy, Slackware, even a 1995 Caldera !
Their content is changing frequently because I buy every month Linux Pratique with another distro inside.
I feel happy when there is a new installation

Re: Poll: What's your (other) favorite distro(s)?
First distro was Slakware 1.0, second Redhat 4.0, third Debian, then FreeBSD 6.0, tested Fedora, ArchLinux and even Gentoo for some time, but switched back to Debian ultimately; I'm forced to use Windows XP/7 since I need to test and evaluate many a propitiatory client/terminal software for trading Stocks, Commodities, Derivatives and, or Forex.
I now a days have...
Installed on harddisk
1) Debian, XFCE
2) FreeBSD 8.2, XFCE
3) Windows 7 Ultimate
Boot off of either ISO images or USB/SD Cards
1) Porteus, XFCE
2) Mint, GNOME
3) Ubuntu, UNITY
4) GRML, MWM (Re-mastered)
5) Zenwalk, XFCE
Provide PXE net/remote boot off of mounted and shared ISO images over NFS
1) Debian, XFCE (Re-mastered, updated)
2) Mint, GNOME (Re-mastered, updated)
3) Ubuntu, UNITY (Re-mastered, updated)
Attempted to provide same for Porteus and Zenwalk, but failed, either the cheatcodes suck or not work as documented

@bdheeman
Remastering so many distros, you are ......... a Master
Impressive collection and always an opportunity to spot a still unknown distro !
I have spotted in your collection GRML I have found on Distrowatch.
Today I have found 4 new distributions !!
Even one day of a retired man won't be enough

Puppy Slacko and all other puppies excepted DPUP
Big distros are worse than Windows, only for geek amusement. Too complicated for me.
Puppies are just for me. Porteus is at the limit because i dont succeed in saving my session and i am not very fond of KDE.

All distros have their Pros and their Cons

The beauty of Linix is its diversity.
The ugliness of Linix its diversity.
I believe the failure of Linux to dominate the market lies in its immense and profoundly confusing diversity. I love slackware because it is one of the less divergent.

Re: Poll: What's your (other) favorite distro(s)?
first linux experience was knoppix 3.5..... very cool, but what can i do with it? ..back in the days of super slow dialup and dumbass windows mindset... .compile(what?) a modem driver..um...
some years later..ubuntu 7~ ..still no interwebs...managed to install blender....usable... until first windows/grub mishap...
then came broadband, and some old laptops to play with....stuck with ubuntu a while...discovered distrowatch....still working my way through...
puppys(who can resist a puppy?)
zenwalk(first slackware experience)
pclinuxos (its from texas, )
...and more...(pile of cds)
currently with arch via archbang...
as for favourite? ...2nd next to porteus, that is..... hmmm
i like arch for its documentation, although recent events (systemd etc) have me wondering how long i'll stick with it .... do i need my edges bleeding that much? certainly a learning enviroment..
gentoo might be the next challenge...or full slackware....

Poll: What's your (other) favorite distro(s)?
Personnally, I like Elementary OS for the look and the fact that it is ubuntu based. A big package pasture. However, I would like it to be as reactive as maniable and flexible as porteus.
