Hi Ed_P,
Have you tried creating the dconf file mentioned at last of the URL you shared.
Change the critical-battery-action='hibernate' to another executable or we can send warning messages in Desktop using notify-send.

You can also use upower based script.
You can also try the battery indicator app which i use that has custom message notification for baterry percentage.

This is an old GTK 4 app, I have added the libraries as well, thats why it has big size

I have not.
Although I have yet to change anything tonight when the battery got low I got the warning and had sufficient time to plug in without the system shutting down.
