Porteus in VirtualBox. Permissions problems.
Hallo.
I have downloaded & installed Porteus-v5.0/Porteus-LXDE-v5.0-x86_64.iso in VirtualBox. All is fine.
The problem[/b]
I am trying to add the VirtualBox Guest Additions for Linux. The file I run is VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
The message I get is:
This program must be run with Administrator privileges. Aborting
Press Return to close this window...
When I download a web browser (such as Chromium), I also cannot copy it to the modules folder.
Permission Denied.
I am logged in as root with password toor
I have heard of "cheat codes" & I have pressed TAB on the boot screen, then chickened out. I have no idea what I am doing. How do I get full permissions to do what I want with my files? Appreciate any help.

- From Menu/System Tools run Vbox builder (enter pass for root when prompted)
- Select VirtualBox Guest Additions
- Copy created vbox-guest module in modules folder and reboot.
VirtualBox Guest Additions (module) can be created only from/into VirtualBox system
and only for kernell with whitch it was created!

Hallo AcnapyxoB & thanks for the response. I have already installed the OS to the virtual hard disk successfully. I have logged out and then logged in as guest (with password guest).
I have searched a little bit and I am confused how I can get those two you mentioned above. Please excuse me, I am brand new to Porteus.

Download them from Porteus mirrors:

Thank you.
I have activated the two xzm files successfully.
I have had some trouble with the following step:
- From Menu/System Tools run Vbox builder (enter pass for root when prompted)
- Select VirtualBox Guest Additions
The error I get after selecting Virtualbox Guest Additions here is:
EDIT: I fixed the above problem. I think it might have been related to network access, which was disconnected. I'm not sure.
The problem now is:
Modules and Permissions
I activate Chromium from my temp directory, and it is enabled if I check System Tools > Porteus Modules but if I reboot, it is gone. Same with the two files you suggested. Same with the VirtualBox module too: enabling them 'disappears' after a reboot.
I still can't copy my files to the Modules directory. Permission Denied.

Open modules directory as root (right click File Manager PCManFM (root))
read this:

this review also can help You (read about modules):

make sure you're not still booting from ISO . ie. make sure it's ejected..
assuming your install is on /mnt/sda1 and the path to 'modules' folder is /mnt/sda1/porteus/modules, can you do this:
Code: Select all
ls -l /mnt/sda1/porteus/modules

Porteus in VirtualBox. Permissions problems.
Hi guys.
Everything is working. Thanks so much.
Running the file manager as ROOT (choosing the red folder when right-clicking the modules folder) did it for me: I can now copy the modules into the modules folder, and activating the modules now stay activated between reboots.
I am happy with this.
Is there an easy way to change resolution higher (currently it's 800x600)? I noticed when looking through some of the Settings screens (to find a way to change the resolution) that some parts of the screen were cut off when running at 800x600 resolution.

there's a way, maybe not easy

menu>preferences>ARandR ... >outputs>virtual1>resolution>choices
then click the green tick (or >layout>apply)
then click the save button (or >layout>save as) which saves a script of your naming (eg. layout.sh) to /home/guest/.screenlayout
then open /home/guest/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart in a text editor and add line: @/home/guest/.screenlayout/layout.sh below the existing lines.

Well I have no idea what happened, but the OS is not starting normally. It stops at:
INIT: Entering runlevel: 4
It has been sitting there for some minutes now.
I followed the instructions to change resolution (thank you). One odd thing I noticed was after I made my changes to the file (adding one line), I noticed the document was completely blank after I saved it, after I opened it again. Probably user error, but I am not sure.
I will re-install Porteus. At least now I'll have some idea of what I am doing, so things shouldn't take too long. I will report back tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help so far.

Hi guys. Thanks for the help.
Success.
After re-installing the OS, everything worked fine. It was user error the first time, I think. Resolution has been changed and Porteus starts up with the new resolution.
I am unable to get shared clipboard & drag & drop features working in VirtualBox, but that might be a VirtualBox thing. The main things are working.

Probably you have to install the guest additions and use what is called the shared folders. Google vbox shared folders francois porteus. There is no drag and drop from vbox to porteus to my knowledge.

I have all DE installed in VirtualBox. Drag and drop I found to work only on Mate and XFCE and only from host to vbox machine (if guest additions are activated of course).
