To get some more information as to why this hang occurs you could to two things:
Open a terminal and type: wicd-gtk
Now click the disconnect button and watch the terminal for info.
You can also type into the terminal: cat /var/log/wicd/wicd.log
after clicking the disconnect button and doing your trick to get back from the hang state.
Maybe the problem can be fixed if you have more information.
How do i become super user?
Wear your underpants on the outside and put on a cape.

porteus 1.1 64bit version
typing wicd-gtk in a terminal windos, then clicking on "Disconnect" button the systems hangs suddenly with no output, I can only
1) Plug off th ac dc adapter
2)restart the DE (ctrl+alt+backspace)
3) open up a virtual consolo (ctrl+alt+F1) then waiting some time and reenterimg in the DE (ctrl+alt+F7) I may operate again..
