This icon corruption sounds like a mimeapp cache problem. It's a messy thing, indeed. But it's strange because I didn't face this problem with none of the 3 machines I've tested Nvidia driver module.

Regarding your complaining about modules, I understand your frustration. Linux has this power of causing madness

But believe me, modules is one of the most interesting things Porteus has. It gives you the ability to have an always fresh OS; so no entropy
