Does Porteus “current” or “testing” Need Reinstallation

Post#1 by limotux » 26 Oct 2021, 11:40

I’m a bit confused between “current” and “testing”.
Do they keep updating/upgrading to latest releases without need to download and install the new release?

What is the difference between both?

Current is 4.0 and has been tested and fixed and refinded to work without problems for the majority of users.

Testing is 5.0rc and is being tested and fixed and refinded to work without problems for the majority of users but hasn't reached that goal yet. Close but not done yet.

Porteus 4.0 is based on Slackware 14.2. Porteus 5.0 will be based on Slackware 15.0, when it is released, and yes you will have to download it and install it and many of your currently installed settings and add-ons will have to be upgraded or replaced.

Thank you Ed P.
So, current is more stable, while Testing is relativelly under development.
Which one auto update or upgrade without need to reinstall?
Sorry I am still new and have lots of questions and facing lots of problems (shown in other posts)
I highly appreciate your patience. But I am really impressed with Porteus.

Thank you.
I see Porteus performance is incredible, I believe it is much ore stable than Artix. But it is really different from all Linuxes I tried.
I feel lost.

Guys: For as far as I am aware using the phrases "current" and "testing" in a Porteus environment only adds to confusion. "Current" is the Slackware name for their development branch, while "testing" is the Debian name for their "waiting for stable" branch.
In my opinion Porteus v4 should be described as "stable" and v5rc as "development".
:D
