USB Boot Persistence and WiFi

Post#1 by limotux » 26 Oct 2021, 08:59

Hi,
I was away for some time but I’m back.
I just downloaded, installed and booted from USB flash disk (KDE, RC3)
Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn’t really get to sort it out.
Here is my INXI of the installed Artix, just to let you know about my hardware.

Code: Select all

 System:  Kernel: 5.10.74-1-lts  x86_64 bits: 64, KDE Plasma 5.23.1, Lenovo G580
Dual Core  i5-3210M bits: 64, Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics driver: i915
Broadcom BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter driver: bcma-pci-bridge
Qualcomm Atheros AR8162 Fast Ethernet driver: alx
- I want to be sure any modification/software/update/settings… etc. be persistent. (How to do that?)
- I need WiFi (I added a new connection but couldn’t even see any WiFi)

Do I need to keep USB plugged in or only before restarting or shutting down?

Please do me a favour. ELI5. I am absolutely new to Slackware and Porteus.
Thank you

I hope somebody can help me with WiFi at least.
Maybe I will just install Porteus but for sure with WiFi at least.
I tried downlaoding the driver as I saw somewhere her om the forum, 'but as it says reboot to get WiFi it didn't work with me because I dont have persistence! I was not allowed to copy anything to the USB.

I will appreciate any help.
Thank you.

Why not? What error were you getting? How were you trying to copy the module?

Porteus is modular, if a driver is needed the needed the driver's .xzm file is placed in the /porteus/modules folder and automatically picked up when booting.

It seems because I am logged in a s "guest", I don't have the privilege to write to USB.
I had while booted a few other issues.
Many commands are not found, right click a tar.gz to change it to szt did nothing... I was trying to install Zim notes.
Is there a GUI package manager?

That's not the cause. Something else is the problem.

There is no command to change .tar.gz to .szt and there is no such thing as .szt in Porteus. Few things are installed to Porteus. Porteus uses .xzm modules and there is a tar2xzm command.

In Porteus 4.0 there is USM, in Porteus 5.0rc it's still a work in progress. :( In the menu there a Bundles option for downloading modules for Porteus.

As far as I remember I saw like 4 or 5 options (like the different releases of porteus... but I couldnt figure out what next after I installed one (similar to the one I installed)

So USM won't work on my installation?

There is no USM in the current 5.0rc3 version. And in the 4.0 version there is a mirror problem which must be handled for USM to work. I have a script to help with that if that is the way you choose to go.

I suspect you were trying to "move"/"cut" and "paste" the file as guest and you needed to "copy" it instead.

Well, if your USB drive is formatted as FAT32 for UEFI support you use the Menu's Porteus SaveFile Manager to create a save.dat file on the USB drive, tweak the porteus.cfg file's APPEND parm to include the changes= cheatcode to point to it, and reboot. Modification changes, passwords, bookmarks, config tweaks, will be written to the save.dat file.

My save.dat files are usually 512MB or less because I save downloads and pictures and alike directly to the drive rather than in Porteus, which runs in RAM. Downloaded updates, .xzm files, are copied to the USB drive's /porteus/module folder.

Download it to Porteus then copy it to the /porteus/module folder or download it directly to that folder. Use menu's Browser Selection and Update entry to download and install a browser.
