How to Install Packages/Software?

Hi,
I am new to Poerteus (and Slackware, first time actually), so I;m now on Porteus-KDE-v5.0rc3-x86_64 from a USB stick.

I am trying to find a way to install software, I read and tried some commands I found here.
guest@porteus:~/Downloads/Software$ usm -u all
bash: usm: command not found
guest@porteus:~/Downloads/Software$ zim
bash: zim: command not found
guest@porteus:~/Downloads/Software$ installpkg zim
bash: installpkg: command not found
guest@porteus:~/Downloads/Software$
So, "usm" and "installpkg" commands are not found!
EDIT: right click -> convert tgz to xzm did nothing (maybe put somewhere?)
How can I install software?
Is there a package manager?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but... that's all I could find.

Thank you.
UPDATE:
I downloaded and installed from sourceforge, then
guest@porteus:~$ usm -u all

Only root can do that.
guest@porteus:~$ sudo usm -u all

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
#2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

Sorry, but while USM is in beta it only supports slackware 14.1.

limitux...you are welcome...

Porteus-5.0rc3 is released without USM,since it has become outdated and needs complete re scripting to represent slackware-current packages and sorting out sources for missing libraries.

Still, when you get accustomed to porteus way of module building, for your needs, there are ways to do it.

You may indicate your extra application needs under the relevant topic for additional modules, till you become an expert. A good Samaritan will build it for you.

There is an Arch based Porteus offer also under Derivatives. You will be able to add any package of your choice, using pman. It is called Nemisis, an active competitor to Slackware Porteus.

Thank you, that's great help and support!
But I prefer to find a way to install it myself.
Currently I was trying to install Zim notes, but I will appreciate if there is a way that I install it.

Thank you.

P.S. Once I find my way to install software (from source and from .deb just in case) I will install on my machine.

I'm so impatient waiting to find my way to install.
Honestly, though Ive been on Linux since 2000, I never found a distro that fast and responsive.

I am running currently from USB.
Whenever I try any command it says it is not found.
I tried pkgtool, slackpkg plus the above.

Porteus, literally mean, portable OS, installed in an USB disk and carried over , in your pocket. Where ever, you are , when you have access to a Pc, insert the usb disk, change boot order in bios and boot to your favourite porteus OS.

When you need an application, go to slackfinder.org, search for your need and download. The file extension will be *.txz.

Right click on downloaded file, and convert it to xzm module.

Copy the module to your porteus/modules folder and activate(context menu)

If all required libraries are present, The application will work, when you start it from menu.

If not, open terminal, and type ldd /usr/bin/xxxx name. it will list out not found libraries. Search the net for them and add to /usr/lib64.Thumbs up.

No idea about zim notes. Check if this module works for you.

limotux,

I could see your frustration in installing applications.

The zim module, posted earlier is really very old, requiring old python.(I did not check it earlier.

Here is the offer of zim-0.74.2. I tested in porteus-5.0rc3-QT.It opens for your notes. It will save your notes in /home/guest

Saving in porteus.

method1.

Go to system tools and click on porteus setting centre

Select show the saving screen(down arrow)

select save porteus changes

click create a save file for porteus

enter details.

File location can be in your usb disk or elsewherein mounted volumes.(500-1000MB).

When you finish, check a save file named by you is in that location.

Now open /boot/syslinux/porteus.cfg file

Add APPEND changes=/path/name of file

reboot

Here after all your changes will be saved in this file.

zim-wiki new module: download, place it in /porteus/module folder and "activate"(context menu)

Application will be listed under Accessories- Zim Desktop Wiki...Cheers and enjoy.
