[NOTICE - TO BE SOLVED AGAIN] Could not acquire name on session bus - Porteus 4.0 x86_64

Post#1 by supertabs » 07 Jun 2021, 08:43

Hi Im using porteus-4.0_x86-64 with cinnamon desktop environment. Upon clicking the switch user in the start menu of cinnamon, and then restarting, a message appears saying "Could not acquire name on session bus", with a button named "Logout", and the rest are all in black. I cannot see the taskbar, the start button and the desktop. Only the message is the thing that I see.

What I have tried so far?

* Tried switching user by typing

Code: Select all

ctrl + alt + del
, then logging in as guest, but still the same
* Tried switching to another desktop environment, then switch back again to cinnamon, which is still the same.

Please help... :( :sos:

Could not aquire name on session bus - Porteus 4.0 x86_64

I mean right from the cinnamon desktop, click the start button, click logout button (If I remember it is the name of the button), then a prompt message will appear, with 3 buttons on it, from my curiosity I clicked "switch user" :D (which upon rebooting resulted to the message "Could not acquire name on session bus" )

Could not aquire name on session bus - Porteus 4.0 x86_64

Hello supertabs. Welcome. :)

I run Cinnamon 4.0 also and when I just tried the Menu > Logout option, for the 1st time ever, nothing happened.

So, need some more info:

1. Are you booting from a USB drive?
2. Are you booting on an EFI system?
3. Are you logged in as guest or root when you boot?
4. Why are you trying to switch user? :hmmm:

1. No, my porteus is installed in a partition inside a hard drive.
2. No, (as I remember). I have a Windows 10 alongside my porteus.
3. I am logged in as a guest when I did it.
4. I am curious :D

Just one question Ed_P, did you reboot your machine after clicking the logout option? When you go to the Menu > Logout > Switch User ?

I will try to recreate this issue in my virtual machine for verification.

I did but I still came up as guest.

The normal ways of booting to root are adding login=root to the APPEND boot parms or by bypassing the desktop by adding a 3 to the Append boot parms. The boot parms are in the /boot/syslinux/porteus.cfg file.

You mention having two systems on your computer. What boot manager are you using to switch between them? I use Grub2Win.

Ed_P, I tried using the Mate Desktop Environment, but upon booting I got "failed to execute login command" :( , then I will be redirected to the lock screen; logging in again produces the same message error. :wall:

My current workaround here is to restart the cinnamon desktop environment by using

Code: Select all

Ctrl + Alt + Esc
:) But it's very annoying everytime I login my guest/root account.

Strange problems supertabs. Did you install the Mate system over the Cinnamon one or created a new partition? What format is your Cinnamon partition? I seem to remember getting the "failed to execute login command" error before, I think it was related to a Porteus driver problem.

On your Cinnamon system open a terminal window and enter:

Code: Select all

su
toor <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< the response to the Password prompt
lspci
dmesg | grep " 0.000000]"
Post the output here (in a code box).

BTW A convenient way to test, and maintain, alternate systems is to boot the ISOs directly.

No, I did not. What I did is to use cheat codes to unload my default desktop environment, then load different types of desktop environment, (003-cinnamon.xzm, 003-mate.xzm, 003-lxqt.xzm, etc.)

The format is ext4.

Maybe. But I don't think so, since it works very well with lxde, lxqt and xfce? Only this mate and cinnamon, are problematic.

What I did is to use cheat codes to unload my default desktop environment, then load different types of desktop environment, (003-cinnamon.xzm, 003-mate.xzm, 003-lxqt.xzm, etc.)
I'm impressed. :o Since you know how to tweak your cheatcodes you should use that approach to create a menu item that boots to root which would resolve the log out/switch user problem you were having initially.

The Problems during Cinnamon startup notifcation upon login is due to the missing gir and typelib files from NetworkManager.

Hello Ed_P!! I tried to login as root using the cheatcode login=root in cinnamon desktop environment, but still the same error appears.

I have some news for you. I tried using the mate desktop environment.

Ed_P, I tried using the Mate Desktop Environment, but upon booting I got "failed to execute login command" :( , then I will be redirected to the lock screen; logging in again produces the same message error. :wall:
Remember this? I tried to go the terminal by pressing

Code: Select all

Ctrl + Alt + F1
on the login manager ( or SLiM is what it is called right?) and then I saw errors that may help.

Here is the messages:

Could not acquire name on session bus - Porteus 4.0 x86_64

Post#14 by ncmprhnsbl » 09 Jun 2021, 08:44

i presume you are using a save.dat to preserve your changes? or some other method?
whatever is causing the problem will be in that.
the simplist fix is to lose those changes and start again.
as for what caused the problem, my guess is that "switch users" is incompatible with slim(simple login manager), and requires a more sophisticated display manager..

Hello ncmprhnsbl! I am using the cheatcode changes=/porteus to save my changes. Should I delete the "changes" folder in the porteus directory?
