Unable to install Porteus v4 and v5 to USB from both Windows and MacOS

Post#1 by simplexity » 28 Apr 2021, 09:48

H all,

On Windows 10, all installation instructions were executed successfully. But my Surface Pro continues to boot from SSD even though the boot order has been changed to USB -> SSD. Any ideas?

On MacOS Sierra, when I navigate to the USB drive and run "sh Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com", I get the following error ...

yeuwen:boot yeuwen$ sh Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com
Verifying archive integrity... 100% MD5 checksums are OK. All good.
Uncompressing Porteus Installer 100% ... Extraction failed.
Terminated: 15

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Yeu Wen

Have you disabled your EFI's Secure Boot option?

MacOS is not a Linux system.

Do you mean the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) setting?

Thank you.

After disabling TPM, on startup, a message showing "Bitlocker preparing recovery" followed by entering the recovery key. Then Windows 10 started again. What else is stopping Porteus booting up?

No (partly because I've never heard of TPM). :) EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) is a replacement for the BIOS system that used to be used to boot a system. This link provides steps how to access it on a Surface Pro: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/sur ... 35945af774

I just checked the site and it is referring to TPM...
What firmware features can I use?
You can access the following firmware features on any Surface Pro model or Surface 3:
Secure Boot Control. Secure Boot technology blocks the loading of uncertified bootloaders and drives.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM). TPM technology provides a major advancement over BIOS in hardware-based security features.

Anyway, I have disabled both, still no luck :-(

how about this one

Still out of luck but I am increasingly convinced the installation of the USB drive is not working because I have attempted rebooting from USB via Windows Settings such as ...
  • Insert the USB drive into the USB port, and then select Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery.
  • Under Advanced startup, select Restart Now.
  • On the Choose an option screen, select Use a device > USB Storage.
Has anyone actually tested the bootable USB made in Windows 10?

Thanks.

Any way to test the created Porteus USB stick on another PC?
Just to make sure the drive itself works.

I can not help with Windows stuff, but maybe
one of these videos can take you a step further.

I'm pretty positive I did for my 1st USB install, since I didn't have a Linux install to work from. And other than disabling EFI's Secure Boot option I change no other Windows setting. I have no idea what your Recovery option does that you use but I've never used a Surface machine.

An approach you may consider, install Grub2Win on your Windows system and use it to control what boots. Not only will that allow you to boot the USB drive it will also allow you to boot the iso file directly on your harddrive.

Some notes I have on creating the Porteus USB drive that may help.

Code: Select all

## Run GParted to partition & format the USB drive with a msdos Partition table. ##
## Use GParted's View > Device Information to check Partition Table type. ##
## Use GParted's Device > Create Partition Table if Partition Table shows as GPT.##
## Or under Windows use: ##
## > diskpart * Run Command Prompt with Admin Rights. ##
## > list disk ##
## >.... ##
## > select disk 1 * Note: disk nbr is the nbr of the USB disk ##
## > clean ##
## > create partition primary ##

You then open the Porteus ISO, copy all the folders and file to the USB drive, then open the USB drive's /boot folder and run the Porteus-installer-for the system you are running.

hth :)

At least 5 years old machine. I cannot even remember which model of Surface it is :-) The USB port is working because I am using it for my USB mouse normally. There is only one USB port!
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4300U CPU @ 1.90GHz 2.50 GHz 8.00 GB

MY BIOS does not have the above options. It simply has an enabled or disabled switch for TPM and Secure Boot.

I have done the above except I only copy boot and porteus folders as instructed in the installation guide. Does it make any difference with the one other EFI folder if I remember correctly?
