Does it make any difference with the one other EFI folder.....
Yes it does.
If one has an EFI system it supports booting the USB drive, but it does nothing with BIOS systems.

MY BIOS does not have the above options. It simply has an enabled or disabled switch for TPM and Secure Boot.
Regardless I suspect your system is using EFI and by not having the EFI folder on the USB drive when you ran the Install is why it's failing to boot.

The space it takes in minimal, you do not have create a separate partition, and it allows you to boot the USB drive on other systems, whether they are BIOS based or EFI based. And should you get a new system which is EFI based it will work on it without having to remake the USB. It works on both my netbooks, one BIOS based one EFI based.

Thanks, Ed. Do you have specific Porteus installation instructions to go with Grub2Win ?
The Porteus install instructions for the USB are the same. But booting is a whole lot easier for Porteus and many other Linux systems whether harddrive installed, USB installed or simply the ISO files.

Does it make any difference with the one other EFI folder if I remember correctly?
In rereading the prior posts I just reread this sentence. "one other EFI folder"!!! What other EFI folder? Where do you see it? :hmmm:

Secure Boot is an UEFI protocol.
And because (s)he has/found a switch to disable Secure Boot....
....what kind of "BIOS" might that be?
You’ll figure it out yourself, do you?. ;)

A Microsoft Surface BIOS. I have an EFI machine and I am pretty sure I have more than

When I reboot later I will check.

Apparently more options than a Surface machine's BIOS settings.

Do note in the settings I have a USB Configuration option with the Enable Boot Support option checked.

Yes it does.
Thanks, Donald. Then the following paragraphs in the installation guide need to be updated.

FROM WINDOWS:
See installation videos here

Porteus can be installed to a flash drive by copying the files from the .iso file to the flash drive and then making the drive bootable. Please note that you must be logged in as an administrator (or run the included 'Porteus-installer-for-Windows.exe' file with administrative priveleges) to make your drive bootable from Windows.
. . .

STEPS TO INSTALL:
1) Insert your flash drive and open it to view the contents. Make a note of the Drive Letter assigned to this drive (e.g. E:\)

2) Copy the folders 'boot' and 'porteus' from the .iso file to the top-level directory of your flash drive (meaning the files should not be placed inside any other folders on the drive. For example, they should be located at E:\boot and E:\porteus, assuming your flash drive is device E:\).
. . .

l will let you know when I get the chance to repeat the exercise again :(

simplexity where are you reading those instructions?? Please review the USB_INSTRUCTION.txt file in the Porteus 5.0rc2 ISO your profile shows you are using.

If your post is quoting from here do note that that page is referring to Porteus 1.1 and CD drives.

Installing Porteus to a USB Flash Drive

As of Porteus Version 1.1, the officially supported method for installing Porteus to a flash drive or hard drive is to burn the ISO image to a CD following the instructions written above, then boot Porteus from the CD and run the program 'Porteus Installer', which can be found in the KDE, LXDE, Razor or Xfce menu under the 'System' heading. This program detects the available devices attached to your system and automates the installation procedure.
It was also written before EFI systems became common. Yes, it is outdated, which is why new install instructions are included in the ISOs.

Unable to install Porteus v4 and v5 to USB from both Windows and MacOS

Some progress. Portues booted from my USB but there is no internet connection.

Neither Portues settings or network preferences help.

What am I missing?

The problem is indeed due to the EFI folder I have not copied over to the USB previously.

Thank you all.

Good to hear you've made progress. :good: As root run this command and post the output.

Unable to install Porteus v4 and v5 to USB from both Windows and MacOS

Post#23 by simplexity » 28 May 2021, 00:02

Hi Ed,

Are you saying me to click on the menu item LXTerminal (root) as opposed to just LXTerminal menu item?

I tried but I couldn't provide a password to get paid the authentication. I don't remember setting any password during the installation. Have I?

Anyway, of I click on the LXTerminal without (root), the terminal pops up as a guest user. The first line says "couldn't access control socket: /tmp/xdg-runtime-guest
/keyring/control: No such file or directory"
If I type the command you have given, I get an error "bash: lspci: command not found"

Of course, sudo lspci will challenge me for password I don't remember setting.

Thank you.

password I don't remember setting.
if you havn't set a password, the default is for root: toor (guest : guest ) (and sudo requires the (target)root password, and generally su is good enough)
if this isn't working, then you have either set the password to something else or some other unknown factor is at play..

Good to see you haven't given up simplexity. The picture is a bit hard to see. On the terminal window if you click on the Edit option then Select All followed by Copy you can paste the screen's output here. Click on the Reply's Code Display option, 5th one from the left, then paste your terminal screen's text.

need to put your specs on, Ed? :D
relevant line is: "Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88W8897 [AVASTAR] 802.11ac Wireless"
a bit of looking around suggests it should be supported in the kernel with mwifiex_pcie ...
just a guess, but probably missing firmware .. maybe : /lib/firmware/mwlwifi/88W8897.bin
try this module : https://www.mediafire.com/file/em8irfet ... 7.xzm/file
put it your <install_place>/porteus/modules folder and reboot or activate it and do: (su) modprobe mwifiex_pcie

Yes ncmp, my specs, a larger screen, and an app to enlarge the picture all helped but the steps I suggested would work easier IMO. ;)

Hopefully your module solved simplexity's problem.

Ed, I have taken another screenshot with bigger fonts for you ;)

I am not sure how to copy the text and paste into a file in the USB.

Thank you.

The steps I spoke of in the prior posting were for copying the terminal widow's text and pasting it in a posting here not on the USB drive.

Terminal window.
Click on the Edit option in the window's menu at the top of the screen.
Click on the Edit menu's Select All option.
Then click on the Edit menu's Copy option.

Porteus forum window.
Click on the </> symbol in the Posting A Reply window.
Place mouse pointer between the two code boxes and right click the mouse.
Click on the Paste option.

Comprenez vous? :)
Ed
