install and login error: kstartupconfig5

I'm installing a 32bit newest version on an old KM4M w/ AMD Athlon from late 2000s. Mounting from CD image.

Everything seems to be fine until an Xwin pops up to tell me "kstartupconfig5 does not exist or fails. the error code is 11."

I check "okay" box and everything continues, but after the login screen and after entering password "guest"...the Xwin message pups up again.

So ctrl/alt/f1 gets me to the command line, and I can see /bin/kstartupconfig5, etc.

Looking for suggestions.
