Kernel panic while trying to play video

Post#1 by tom2238 » 14 Jul 2020, 19:27

Hi all,
I got another computer (desktop) and tried to install Porteus, version 3.2.2 32bit MATE desktop (x86_64 unsupported). Everything seems to work, but when trying to play video (AVC H264, MPEG2 etc., via Gnome-Mplayer), the system panics with message in syslog:

Code: Select all

BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000004
Using distribution kernel: 4.9.0-porteus
Motherboard: Intel D865GBF
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
Graphic card: Intel 82865G, kernel module in use i915

On different linux distros eg. Linux Mint 17.2, Ubuntu 14.04 (and 10.04) and Zorin OS 12.4, playing videos works fine. Maybe it is some kernel driver, Xorg or media player issue. I don't know.

Thanks.

Kernel panic while trying to play video

Post#3 by tom2238 » 14 Jul 2020, 23:16

Thanks for reply. Try Porteus 4 is planned.
When trying to use the kernel parameter 'nomodeset', the video can be opened without crashing the system, but the image is not displayed, only the sound is playing.

lspci -v output:

Jul 15 10:16:15 porteus kernel: [ 131.840319] ---[ end trace e7a4ac4482319a6c ]---
Syslog file has about 10 MB, test video is 2 minutes long.
I will try the 4.9.216 kernel, but I have to compile it for i686, I only have the x86_64 version.

Kernel panic while trying to play video

Thank you for the kernel. However system is now slow, when playing video and Xorg take a lot of CPU %.

In syslog are a lot of similar error messages:

Kernel panic while trying to play video

5.0rc1 Menu entry mpv Media Player does nothing. Get it through Alt-F2 gnome-mpv. Full screen works, but resizing by dragging crashes system. Also crashes when resizing vlc. Maybe because not using nvidia driver.

Kernel panic while trying to play video

Post#10 by tom2238 » 16 Jul 2020, 09:14

Thank you for the kernel. The video can be played without crashing the system. There are no error messages in syslog and dmesg. CPU usage is within the expected limits. Now I will try to use this kernel. Thanks and what <"All patches" patching was done> really mean? Is it some Porteus patches for the kernel?

Kernel panic while trying to play video

Post#13 by tom2238 » 24 Jul 2020, 19:24

Hi. I tried compile kernel 4.19.133 myself with some CONFIG modifications and kernel works fine too.
However, I have found that when transferring data over a network, the data counter (visible via ifconfig eth0) is reset every 4 GB. I don't know if it's a kernel, computer or NetworkManager error. I will try different kernels and see the result.
