Hey guys,
I got to the point where I understand that to install any software package in Porteus, I first need to update the USM app and the repository databases. I tried doing so from the Package Manager application, it gives out an error message saying something didn't work or update failed or something.
Then I tried doing it from the terminal and I get this:
Code: Select all
root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -u all
find: ‘/tmp/xdg-runtime-guest/gvfs’: Permission denied
14.2+
alien was updated 7785 seconds ago. Skipping.
salix was updated 7769 seconds ago. Skipping.
Starting slacky database update

One or more errors occurred while usm was running:
FATAL ERROR!
usm update_database 248

Can you help me fix this?
Solution:
This is a bug with Porteus 5 rc1. Will have to wait for the next release for this to work.
No way to install applications through Package manager or terminal as of now. Only way is to download the source files and build, or to use AppImage versions.

2 options
select a different mirror in /etc/usm/mirrors-slacky.txt
if this doesn't work too, remove slacky from /etc/usm/usm.conf (temporarily)
The relevant line:
DISTROS="slackware slackwarepatches slacky salix alien ponce slackonly"
when done > usm -u all

USM on 5.0 rc1 is not functional. It hasn't been upgraded to support the Slackware release 5.0 is built upon. Maybe when 5.0 rc2 is released it will be supported.

Oh, so that means I can't get any software application installed on my USB through the package manager. Only downloading a tar or appimage file will work. Did I get it correct?
Also, I wanted to understand the terminology - does 5.0 rc means it is in development or testing phase yet? Not a stable version?
If so then I can think of going back to 4.0 (get a new iso and re-prepare my USB). What is your suggestion?

Yes.
rc => Release Candidate as in "running for office" but not there yet.

Hey Ed.
So is there a way I can get applications installed or run on my Porteus 5 right now? Not many linux applications are available as one file (like windows exe files). Most of them require you to first set up the package installer first. Any way to get this work in my case?
Thanks.

You can search the bundles option in the menu for configured apps that can be added to it. Menu > Admin > Bundles. If brokenman updates USM this year it will make the next Release Candidate, 5.0 rc2, a whole lot easier to test.
If you're looking for easier to use expanded functionality use a 4.0 release.

True. But the thing is even when 4.0 is a stable release, the touchpad doesn't work on that. I tried with KDE and Cinnamon version ISO both.
That's why I tried 5.
