Problems (using Porteus 3.1) with keyboard in LibreOffice Writer

Post#1 by TeamPlayer » 13 Feb 2019, 03:05

I installed Porteus 3.1 on an old Dell Latitude Dd505 laptop and it works great. (All I use it for is LibreOffice and the LibreOffice version is 4.3.4.1.)The one problem I have with it is when I inadvertenly hit certain keys, or perhaps combinations of keys, problems happen. For instance the entire OS will just shut down. Or today I got a split screen. Or I often get this "Shutdown" window that says: "Are you sure you want to shutdown? Porteus will close in 30 seconds." And then it does a countdown. I can cancel out of it, but still these problems are a pain. I thought it might be the LibreOffice shortcut keys and went through all of them, but none of them are connected to the problems I've been having. Searching online I found this link in one of your forums that was somewhat like my problem, but I couldn't find an answer for my problems there.
I don't understand... I'm hoping there's an easy answer for this, as I'm not a real whiz in the terminal. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe updated versions of Porteus and LibreOffice would work better for you. :happy62:

Thanks Ed. I'm definitely going to try that once I finish this project. I am concerned that anything bigger might not work on such a tiny laptop though. https://www.cnet.com/products/dell-latitude-d505/specs/ But that will be another post. Thanks again.

4.0 will run just fine on your 1GB RAM machine. Compare the size of a 4.0 ISO with that of your 3.1 ISO.

BTW Do you have the touchpad disabled when you type? I know my palms & thumbs can cause the cursor to jump around while I'm trying to type on my Dell. Tweaking the touchpad settings helps. Check out this thread: Mouse pad option

Oh my gosh! Thanks Ed! I didn't know I could disable the touchpad! That has been such a pain in the butt avoiding touching it! And I was able to disable it now. Wow. But yeah, that doesn't deal with my other problems. But this touchpad thing is huge! Thank you!

Regarding getting Porteus 4.0, while looking for the touchpad issue, I came across some info. on my laptop.

version: Porteus v3.1
kernel: 3.17.4-porteus

32 bits
cpu: 1493.976
name: Intel (R) Celeron (R) M processor 1500 MHz
RAM:
max capacity: 2GB
number of devices: 2
Mem. total: 251848kB
Mem. free: 3960kB
Mem. available: 146092kB

I was pretty startled by that "Mem. total," which equates to only .25GB.

That's if I was reading it right. I'm not real knowledgeable about this stuff.

So I'd love to get the Porteus 4.0, especially to get a later version of LibreOffice Writer, but I wonder if my laptop as it is would support it.

And for what I use it for (just writing text) it's fast enough.

And it was pretty miraculous, lol, getting Porteus 3.1 on it. (Like I said I'm not a real whiz at this stuff!)

Maybe you can tweak the keyboard to minimize errors. See if this thread helps. Default keyboard layout
