[SOLVED] Won't power off during shutdown

Using Porteus 4.9.0 with KDE Desktop on Toshiba Tecra R940 laptop off of a Lexar S75 USB 3.0 64G USB drive. (Laptop has failed hard drive which got me into this whole thing.) USB drive is formatted ext4.

I've been using Linux about a week, and before starting to mess around with Porteus I used Slax (which I quickly realized has not been updated since 2013.)

Anyway, I've gotten to a problem with Porteus that I have been unable to fix - the machine never actually turns off. During shutdown, it logs off, goes through a normal-looking shutdown (or at least, I see no error messages), the screen goes dark, the indicator light on the USB turns off, but the power indicator for the laptop stays on and I can still hear the fan running.

I initially tried it on a FAT32 drive, but used Porteus installer and switched to ext4. The shutdown problem is consistent with both installs.

I consulted viewtopic.php?f=124&t=4754 and tried a number of things.

Logged in as root in desktop - same problem.
Always fresh - same problem.
Log into console as root

Code: Select all

init 3
to return to text mode

Code: Select all

poweroff
- same problem

Code: Select all

shutdown -hP now
- same problem

Does anyone have ideas on how to fix this?

Welcome to Porteus. Porteus 4.9.0 is not clear. Do you mean kernel 4.9.0? Please also provide name of iso file used to set up Porteus.

Porteus system info gives me: VERSION: Porteus-v3.2.2 Kernel: 4.9.0-porteus
The .iso I used was Porteus-KDE-v3.2.2-x86_64.iso

Also, after the laptop had recently powered up from being asleep (I had closed the lid and left it a while) it shut down properly and turned off. When I shut down after that, it was the same problem of everything going dark but power remaining. I tried to recreate that scenario by going to Leave/Suspend to RAM. After waking up the system, I was able to shut down the system and it turned off. So far this is the only scenario I have found to cause it to shut down correctly.

Hetherington try using a more current kernel/vmlinux combination. See options here: http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/kernel/

Thank you, that worked perfectly. I didn't even realize there was a more up-to-date kernel.
