can't connect to net

Post#1 by kalista » 19 Oct 2016, 01:47

I installed Porteus 3.1 32bit (kde4) on my usb.
Everything works fine except internet. It starts connecting automatically but doesn't connect.
It is my first time using OS other than Win, and I am having really hard time adapting.
I'm using Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family PCI Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20) to connect to cable modem.
Everything is fine on Win.
Maybe driver problem? I don't know.
I need step-by-step solution.

Thank you.

Sorry for if my english is bad.

Hello kalista.

When you right click on the network icon on the taskbar what does it show you?
Sorry for if my english is bad.

If you still have problem try the pns-tool in command line:

Code: Select all

pns-tool
And report the result of your experience.

How do I get my wireless card to work?
http://www.porteus.org/faq.html
Use 'Network Manager' or the 'pns-tool/xpns-tool' utilities (launched from terminal) to setup your connection in an 'easy way'. Network Manager users may be interested in a few tweaks which help to connect faster: click here. Broadcom owners who prefer open source drivers over broadcom-sta should read this HOWTO: click here.

It showed me the list of available interfaces -eth0 and lo (I chose eth0)
Then it asked if I want to obtain Ip address through dhcp (I chose yes, if I choose no where am I gonna get Ip address)
Then asked do I have wifi (no)
Asked me to check if everything is ok
Then started "Activating pns-tool settings", told me to wait few seconds
And nothing.

Nevermind.
I've decided not to waste my time anymore on this.
Problem is small and unsolvable and I just wanted to try portable os to see if its practical (Its not).
Linux is definitely not for me.
Thank you anyway!

Hi, kalista. Welcome on the board!
If you want you can test internet connection in Porteus-v3.2rc5 or wait final release Porteus-v3.2 (includes important fixes of different connections...).

hmmm On my 3.1 system I see:

Enable Networking
Enable Wi Fi
Enable Notifications
Connection Information
Edit Connections
About

But my 3.1 system is LXQT based so maybe that's the difference.

Well it's not for everybody so you may be right. Sometimes a configuration may need to be tweaked. As Blaze pointed out there is a new version in the works maybe when it comes out it will work for you without tweaking.

Patience does not seem to be the virtue of kalista. So let him be with windoz
