• Open a terminal
  • Code: Select all

    su
    # Give pw 'toor' unquoted
    update-opera
    Say it's opera you're after.
  • Sit back and wait
  • When finished you should find opera in the menu
  • Good luck!

I managed to do as you suggested and downloads of Opera, Chrome and Libre Office appeared to be successful given the download material in the terminal. Unfortunately Opera, Chrome And Libre Office do not appear anywhere in the menu.

I should of asked do you need to set up persistence first
. The downloads appear nowhere.

Do they appear after you reboot?

Consider doing them one at a time and testing. It will save you time.

While I have tested rc3 I haven't tested the update functions. If they create modules and put them into the porteus module folder they should be there after a reboot. It's possible they are not in the menu because they haven't been activated.

They do not appear after a reboot but I would have thought that persistence would have to been set up to save changes. I tried again to download, this time Firefox and although the download appears to be successful in the terminal Firefox appears nowhere in the menu. In the tmp file in the root folder a Firefox. txz file is shown but I can't do anything with it

I tried again, this time downloading the Mate version. I tried to download the Chrome browser in the terminal and was told that libbfd was not found.
I like Porteus 3.1 as I have mentioned so I will wait until 3.2 has improved so that a Linux newbie like myself can use it with ease. It has obviously got problems re browser installation.

Please read about the basic functionality of Porteus on the website. If you are not saving then changes then every time you reboot, things are set back to original state. You DON'T want to reboot after downloading the firefox package.

1) If you chose to make a module after download then the module (xzm) will be in /tmp
2) If you chose NOT to make a module then a slackware package (txz) will be in /tmp

The choice you made above will determine how you install the package.
1) activate /tmp/firefox*.xzm
2) installpkg /tmp/firefox*.txz

/tmp is a volatile area which means whatever you store there does not persist across reboots. Move it into the 'modules' folder on your install media if you want it to show up on your next reboot.

So basically the new 3.2 update- functions work the same as USM!! I thought I had read that they did more, namely the move to the modules directory and the activate.

Sorry lobsters15, I mislead you. :(

It doesn't resolve dependencies and it adds the duckduckgo search engine as the default. Please use the update scripts when updating browsers and support Porteus in this way. The duckduckgo search engine generates income for Porteus.

Hopefully they add forum.porteus.org as the homepage also. And maybe limit the browser's caches.

I am afraid this is all a bit too difficult and I will eagerly await the completed all dancing Porteus 3.2.
I tried using installpkg in the terminal but the command was not found. I also don't know how to create modules. I thank everyone for their help but will continue using Porteus 3.1 until 3.2 becomes available as a fully tested distro offering the choice of browsers, word processing etc

When slackware moves, we will move. Honestly I think you should try a little harder. When the new version comes out you will still have to use the same method to update your browser. The only thing you are missing is that you didn't use a root console.

After you updated your browser did you try double clicking on the file that it downloaded to /tmp?

Believe me i have tried but as is well known Porteus is not really for Linux newbies like myself. I am not at all familiar with using the terminal although I enjoy LInux having Linux Mint on a netbook and Zorin 9 on a very old laptop.
I have tried again this time downloading the Cinnamon version. I downloaded the Opera browser from the terminal and double clicked on the txz file in the tmp folder. This took me to a new window showing three files, one with 0 bytes, another called install with 14kb and a third called usr with 169.5 Mb. The problem is I have no idea what to do with these files. Some random clicking resulted in nothing. I had hoped to simply double click, install and the Opera browser would appear under Internet in the Menu. I am able to install software easily in Mint and Zorin but Porteus is a different kettle of fish.
I really need a step by step breakdown of how to install downloaded software from the terminal but I appreciate that this forum is not really for newbies like myself.
However i must add that the 3.1 Porteus i am using is excellent having set up persistence.

^^^ As brokenman said, if you show willingness, we will walk you through. But bear in mind this is all new for us, so it's not so easy:
  • Open a terminal

    Code: Select all

    su
    # Enter the password 'toor', without quotes
    update-opera

  • Open another terminal

    Code: Select all

    ls /tmp
  • Please paste output of this in a code block here

    Code: Select all
Output of terminal
Then one can have a better idea.
