[SOLVED] Installing / uninstalling programs

Post#1 by konradoslaw » 06 Jun 2011, 13:32

Hello everybody,
(sorry for my bad spelling, English isn't my native language.)

I'm completely newbie in Linux OS  , I'm looking for simply & fast USB bootable distro.
The Porteus looks very promising, basic configuration, using GUI and excellent "ready-to-use script" (Language Configuration tool - great idea!) didn't make any problems for the beginner, like I'm. 8)
But I want to install Skype and completely don't know where to start. :Search:
I read something about creating modules from Debians packages, but repositories and dependence are black magic to me
Going to the heart - can U tell me how to install (and then uninstall) applications under Porteus, (like, for example Skype)? From where is best to get them (Debians repository ?) and how to prepare them (e.g. .deb > .xzm or .lzm ?) taking into account the dependence. :unknown:
I will be very grateful for you help.
Thanks in advance and best regards  .
Konrad.

EDIT (07.06.2011 - 17:56)==================================================
I know from experience that the completed forum threads are very helpful for newbies, so...
I've solved my 'problem' with this document, I've made my Skype module using 'slackyd'.
Skype needs mysql-5.1.56-i486-1 and qt-4.7.0_7abde40-i486-3 packages (dependencies).
Thanks!

My advice at this stage ..... before we implement the Package Manager ... is to visit the slax.org/modules.php website and find skype with all of it's dependencies. Then use the 32bit Porteus rc2 to convert all the modules to Porteus modules. Then you can start it.

If i have time today i will bundle skype with all dependencies and upload for you.

A few links to help get you started with modules:

http://porteus.org/info/docs/36-modules ... dules.html
http://porteus.org/info/docs/36-modules ... udies.html
http://porteus.org/info/docs/57-general ... cture.html

These are all specific to Version 1.0, so if you're using Version 0.9, some of the commands will be different (lzm instead of xzm), but the concepts are the same.

I'm not telling you to build your own skype package from scratch today (follow brokenman's suggestion to pull it from the slax repo or wait to see if he can bundle it up for you), but this should help you learn more about modules and get your feet wet with how they work.

Thanks!
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

Thank You all very much. :D
I will read this articles and try to make modules on my own.
Brokenmans proposition of bundling up Skype module is very kind (Thanks :good: ), but I would like to learn how to do it on my own, because Skype, probably, isn't only module which I will need in the future.
Now I'm dealing with all sort of smaller "windows user" :fool: Linux problem, so making of this module goes veeery slow (but in good direction, I hope :) )
I will certainly bother You i future, so arm yourselves in patience
Once again, thanks and sorry for spelling and lack of linux knowledge.

Yes, these articles are really great, and they helping me a lot. Especially 'Understanding Module Creation and Manipulation: Two Case Studies' - I'm sure it will solve my problem, as soon as I deal with fewer obstacles.
Now I'm struggling :x with save.dat - I probably did it too tight/small (500 MB, USB drive=4GB), and when using slacky for downloading dependencies, it's tell my that there is no place left.

As soon as I find some time and with your invaluable help, I'm sure I'll deal with it. Then, Porteus will not have any secrets for me 8)
Once again BIG thanks :good: and keep your fingers crossed :)

P.S.
Now I regret that it didn't push harder in school on English lessons - but I hope you understand a little, or pretty much guessing what I try to say

Thanks, kondradoslaw!

By the way, if there is anything in those documents that is unclear or confusing, please let me know. I want them to be understandable by folks who are unexperienced with our system and are not native english speakers, so you are the perfect person to critique them :)

Also, your english is fine, I understand what you are saying. But, you can also ask questions in the "other languages" sections of our forum - there is a polish section for 32-bit here: Polish

We have some very experienced users who are polish :)
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!
