gimp

I have a slackware package called "gimp-solibs-2.8.6-x86_64-1Ahau" supposedly installed on my system, however, gimp is not installed so I'm wondering if this package is necessary to run other programs. I've so far unsuccessfully tried to install gimp on this version of Porteus. I have Porteus-KDE4-v3.1-x86_64 which I am using now with very little success in installing packages, however, it runs so effortlessly with no delays at all (very fast). I also have Porteus-XFCE-v3.1-x86_64 that does not run well (many delays, lots of waiting time, long delays in browsing, very slow), however almost all of the packages I've installed work ie Firefox, gimp, exfat file recognition, etc. Really I'm wondering if that "gimp-solibs" package is necessary and might be causing a problem in installing gimp on the KDE Porteus version?

Hello russ49
Have you had the time to read this thread?
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=5489
imo ztrapl is doing a great job, providing modules for kde.(including gimp)

Thanks Donald...I'll give it a try. I really like the speed of this version and would like to get this running with gimp. Thanks again.

Hey Donald,
This Porteus module worked!!! Thanks a bunch for the info. Really am enjoying this version for my laptop...it is fast but a little
involved in getting things to work.

I am using this gimp module however it does not start correctly in the Porteus/modules directory. Something is lost in the boot processes. I have to restart it after booting up and then it runs correctly. It is possible that when booting I have it too deep in the file system. It's in the USB drive then "/mnt/sdb1/multiboot/Porteus-KDE4-v3.1-x86_64/porteus/modules/gimp. I am using Yumi to boot many versions of linux.

Please try the following:
1) in terminal mode call gimp with the gimp command and give us the error message output.
2) once booted into the kde desktop double click on the gimp module to see what is says. You will see if it is activated or not.

commandline output:

guest@porteus:~$ gimp
gimp: error while loading shared libraries: libgimpwidgets-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Gimp doesn't start either way (from commandline or from gui icon in the menu). But works perfectly by deactivating the Porteus/module and restarting module located at "Guest/downloads". IE if you activate the gimp module after bootup it works but not before.

the md5sum of both copies of the gimp module are:

Mabe some other module is interfering. Just rename gim.xzm to z-gimp.xzm. :)

Thanks Francois, I renamed it gimp-2.8... and other gimp names and it didn't work but last I renamed it "imageManip.xzm". On first boot it worked ...will reboot a few times just to make sure. Will edit this page if on subsequent boots it doesn't work.

Sorry, I should have specified why the z in front. z will force gimp to be loaded last after the potential conflicting module.

You get it?
