[SOLVED] How do I install wireless drivers for TL-WN727N?

Post#1 by killermenpl » 15 Jan 2016, 17:06

I have a TL-WN727N wireless USB card. It is my only way of connecting to the internet from this computer. I've been looking for drivers for it for over 2 hours already and I found two things: a site called wireless.wiki.kernel.org with drivers here, which I have no idea how to download and install; and the official(?) drivers from TP-Link here. I follow the instruction in .pdf, but whenever I type "make" in the terminal I get some errors about missing files. I have the devel.xzm module active. I'm kind of new to Linux, I've been using Ubuntu for some time, but I needed something I can take with me to school and have it always configured as I want to.

Hopefully you got the right Driver..you didn't tell wich version you have..v4?
however:
unpack the zip file > you get a folder "TL-WN727N_V4_150909" > inside this folder
is another folder "Linux Driver" > rename this Folder to Linux_Driver > run the
make command (as root of course)..should compile now.

I do not have this usb-wifi...so anything else is up to you..
( follow the instructions in the pdf file )
good luck

Hi

thanks to Donald
Please use the Tp page to correctly id your product first as downloading the wrong driver if we need it will only lead to tears and time wasting

http://www.tp-link.com/en/faq-46.html

However, FWIW I have a usb dongle that does home wifi that is ....its a router not a modem and Porteus kernel already had the driver for it.
I insert my dongle and run top line to show hardware and bottom line to show driver

Code: Select all

lsusb | grep WLAN
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191SU 802.11n WLAN Adapter

lsmod | grep 8712
r8712u 184158 0
If you get a chance and the tp driver fails for you, please post the full contents with dongle inserted of

Code: Select all

lsusb
lsmod
You may not know that most drivers in Linux come from the kernel but some do need firmware and that may be likely for your device but lets look for simple solution before compiling?

but what is more important is the lsusb command shows the make:model ids......and that will tell us more about what you have.

Leaping ahead your maker id may result in one of these entries?
148f Ralink Technology, Corp.=====maker id

below are product ids
1000 Motorola BC4 Bluetooth 3.0+HS Adapter
1706 RT2500USB Wireless Adapter

and duckduckgo search shows someone.....version number unknown has this output

I tryed to rename folder to Linux_driver.Make finished without errors. Make install does not work.

Code: Select all

Entering '[path]/Linux_Driver/NETIF/os/Linux'
make[2]: Makefile.6.util: No such file or dirrectory
make[2]: ***No rules for making object Makefile.6.util. Stop
    make[1] ***[install_netif] Error 2
    make: [install] error 2
The wikidevi links give me ssl errors which I can't skip.
Also, I never knew there were different versions. I have v4.

Hi
The wikidevi links give me ssl errors which I can't skip.
suggests you have not updated your certificates or are not using a web browser that has its own database of certificates.

Can you name your distro please including how you downloaded it such as the iso builder method
---what I am looking for a things like XFCE, KDE etc and also ..... x86 or x86_64 (32 bit or 64 bit)

what web browser are you using to fail to get to a https page please.

2) I am on Nemesis branch but as a generalization
make command can be done as a local user (non-root)
but make install affects the system files so must always use a root power
---either precede command with

Code: Select all

sudo make install
or if sudo does not work try

Code: Select all

su
(input pw normally toor)
make install

I'm using 32bit XFCE without UEFI and I always login as root and use sudo in terminal.

Hi
and I always login as root and use sudo in terminal.
if you always login as root you can open a terminal and make and the make install commands should be run without sudo please

FWIW sudo is for those who login as guest and want to get root powers. My understanding from an earlier post of mine is that Porteus/Slackware does not use sudo but uses su.....and su is only for users who login as guest.

So you may have tricked the system with the sudo command. You will notice my comments in (2) refer to a non-root user so none of apply to you.

Understand?

Tryed without sudo before, just in case. It didn't work. I should have said that earlier. Sorry.

OOPS I have editted this post

Ok I found one gremlin in the reply by donald he was mislead by the folder name.

please go up one dir level so you can rename the dir name as per code box
(brackets explain)

Code: Select all

gordon@asus:~/Downloads/TL-WN727N_V4_150909/Linux_Driver$ cd .. (to go up one level)
mv Linux_Driver Linux
cd Linux
make
I find make is starting to work for me...but I am not a Slackware distro per se

http://askubuntu.com/questions/577941/i ... 017#578017
download the zip file:
https://github.com/porjo/mt7601/archive/master.zip
unzip > cd into /mt7601-master/src
make
make install
modprobe mt7601Usta

plug in your wifi dongle > check if it works now

If we can entice OP to either a neko kernel on Slackware variant of Porteus or go the whole hog and go Nemesis he can have the kernel v that your zip file alludes to

good find BTW
## MT7601U Linux driver

*Now that Kernel 4.2 has been released which contains [a driver for mt7601u](https://github.com/torvalds/linux/tree/ ... ek/mt7601u), this repository is now deprecated.*

@Donald
I downloaded the .zip file, unzipped and cd into src/. Make - no errors, Make install - no errors. Modprobe:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/mnt/sdb1/porteus/downloads/mt7601-master/src# modprobe mt7601Usta
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'mt7601Usta': Exec format error
Wireless does not work. Checked with

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
All I saw was eth3 (which I have no idea why it isn't eth0, but whatever) and lo. No wlan0.

@aus9 If you could tell me exactly what you are talking about and how to do it I'm willing to try it. It's not like it's hard to get porteus installed again in case something goes wrong.
