Re: USM

Post#46 by johnsmith » 07 Dec 2015, 13:44

As requested:

guest@porteus:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
quiet initrd=initrd.xz nomagic base_only norootcopy kmap=es,us BOOT_IMAGE=vmlinuz

Actually, i have downloaded Porteus MATE version, and it is worst... USM 3.1.6, it gave me errors on ponce and slackware too...
So I'm downloading a brand fresh new:
Porteus 64 bit, EFI, GUI, KDE, Chrome+Libre office+Programming+Skype.
And I will begin again.

With your recommendation then:
1) Run always fresh.
2) Update USM only. (Checking version, but it will be 3.1.7)
3) Update all then.
4) See what happens.

But if I have the same error on ponce database. How can Install some packages I need, but actually don't have, in order to keep Porteus? (Because... really... I love it!)

The additional packages I will need are: tcl, tcl 8.6, tk, tk 8.6, tcl_doc, tk_doc and gimp.
Maybe I'm forgetting some other.

I will tell you if it works.

Ok, until the community fix it, I will try to be more practical.
Is there any way to install any package offline?
I mean, if I just download the Porteus packages from the server to my computer, I add it to /mnt/sdb1/porteus/modules/,
can I call the modules I need in order to load them?

I mean, if I can't use Tcl, Tk and Gimp... it is useless.
On Ubuntu, for example, I mainly use: Firefox, Libre Office, Tcl, Tk, Gimp, any media player and any email client.
If I can't use all of them, or similar, then I will keep Ubuntu. I don't like it, but it works.

Yes, and here is a practical way at the moment. Download this file and put it in the /var/usm/ponce directory:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1Uj3O ... sp=sharing

Hopefully with ponce fixed, and you manually update the remaining libraries, USM will work.
Is there any way to install any package offline?
Yes, it can be done, but...

Most packages are in .txz format and can be easily converted to .xzm with the txz2xzm command. The power of USM is it checks for app dependencies and includes them with the downloaded app such that the resulting .xzm module works on your system. Some .txz apps are completely self contained and don't need any dependencies added but it's hard to know in advance.

A while ago the alien library had a malfunction with the flashplayer app, this is a script I used to manually download it. If the ponce fix above doesn't resolve the problem you're having you can try tweaking it for apps you want to try.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

Thanks. Interesting find although I don't think it is pertinent since OP insists he is using a completely fresh version wherein the ponce repo should be present. Anyway I will check out why it is trying to update ponce then removed from the DISTROS list.

Ok...
I have monitored the updating process and there is something quite strange:
when ponce tries to update, it downloaded all the files but later I have this famous error regarding that checksums.MD5.gz is not in gzip format.
So I access to /var/usm/ponce/ and I can see the gz files uncompressed.
If I try to extract manually, I can, but the checksums.md5 uncompressed is not the same one that "bogomips" sent me.
So there is something wrong with the file at the server, I pressume, because the file brand new downloaded from the server didn match with "bogomips" one if it is updated.

That is why it is so strange. Everyone (with the same version of porteus) updates from the same server, with the same files. So you say, after the error you look in /var/usm/ponce and the file is decompressed?

STEP BY STEP:
Going to the bases... maybe something is wrong.
1.- Download a Porteus ISO.
Image

2.- Open it and copy folder "porteus" and "boot" to a USB pendrive. (The existing folders are for O.S. Customization)
Image

Image

3.- In order to make bootable the USB pendrive, in my case, run Windows Utility:
Image

Image

4.- Then restart system:
Image

5.- Boot from the USB Pendrive:
Image

6.- Run as Always Fresh:
Image

7.- Run in console mode: su + usm -v + usm -u usm
Image

8.- Update USM:
Image

9.- Update everything, one by one, except ponce, as it is the problematic one:
Image

Image

Image

Image

10.- And then ponce. And as always:
Image

Have I made anything wrong?

@johnsmith

Could you edit line in /etc/usm/usm.conf :

Code: Select all

# Storage of database files (e.g PACKAGES.TXT)
DBDIR=/var/usm

# usm works with the repositories of various slackware based distros.
# The variable below is used to find the mirror for each distro given.
# The mirror files are stored in ${DBDIR}/mirrors-distro.txt
DISTROS="slackware slackwarepatches slacky salix alien ponce"
to

Code: Select all

# Storage of database files (e.g PACKAGES.TXT)
DBDIR=/opt/usm

# usm works with the repositories of various slackware based distros.
# The variable below is used to find the mirror for each distro given.
# The mirror files are stored in ${DBDIR}/mirrors-distro.txt
DISTROS="slackware slackwarepatches slacky salix alien ponce"
and ensure both DBDIR= and DISTROS= lines are identical to example.

Then try usm -u all ?

P.S. Could only provide gimp 32 bit :(

Yes, if you have the compat-32 libraries:
