Porteus

Maybe not possible but I thought in my travels through Porteus information that I saw a way of making it persistent, by saving files to the hard drive and every time I reboot the live Porteus CD that it would complete the build by going to what is stored on the hard drive. Is this correct, if it is, the big question is how. Cheat codes maybe, but where do you put the cheatcode before you boot you live CD. As you can see I know little about the Persistent process, so if you can contribute I would be greatful

When the graphical Porteus logo appears with the boot menu,
choose your desired menu entry and hit the TAB key, which will allow you to edit the command line.

changes=/dev/device
changes=/path/
changes=/path/file.dat

All changes made in Porteus are kept in memory until you reboot.
With this boot parameter, you tell Porteus to use a device
other than your memory for storing changes.
You can, for example, format your disk partition /dev/sdb2
with some Linux filesystem and then use 'changes=/dev/sdb2'
to store all changes to that partition.
If it is a windows filesystem (FAT32/NTFS) you have to create a save.dat
file first.

btw...why not use a USB-thumb-drive?...much more comfort and ease of use, especially if you want to use additional modules.

Thanks for the response , Do I partition a thumb drive and format that partition and it becomes a sdb2, I'm a little lost on the 2 part. I have Porteus on a large thumb drive but for some reason I can't boot from thumb drive , changed the bios boot order and used f8 to grub and set boot order but neither worked. but I can still partition it to get a sdb2 (if that's how it's done) Dam , just thought if it won't boot will it read from the usb thumb drive. I assume it will write because I got the distro on it. It's really late here and I'm starting to get to the point where I stop making sense , so I'll leave it at that. Thanks a lot.

When you put Porteus on a USB you need to change into the boot directory and run the installation script in there. This makes it bootable.

"sdb2" is only an example.
You can choose any Partition you like
Depending on how many partitions exist it could be sda1, sda2, sda3 etc.
The 1st drive,(mostly the HDD), = sda, 2nd drive (e.g.the Thumb-drive) = sdb
and the Numbers 1,2,3 are the Partitions

I would rather find out why the flash drive don't boot.
Suppose the Porteus installation on the thumb-drive is fine, plug it in, boot the
Live-CD and select the Plop Bootmanager > enter, take out the CD,
in Plop choose USB > hit enter to boot.
any error messages?
