Install fails with error code '2' (v3.1.0 and 3.0.1)

Post#1 by rgroner » 27 Feb 2015, 19:20

I've done this plenty of times before without problem, and now I can't install Porteus on anything, which makes me think it's something I'm doing.

I'm booting with my Porteus CD, then running the Porteus installer. When it pops open the console text box and says to continue hit enter, I hit enter, and then it says "Failed to install with error code '2'." It's hard to see the message because the text screen closes before I can really see it..I had to record it with my cell phone so I could play it back to read it. :roll:

I've tried two different CPUs. I've tried two different hard drives. I've tried two different SATA cables. I've tried two different installs of Porteus (3.1 x64 and 3.0.1 x32), and all the same error.

Again, since I've done it plenty of times successfully with these very same install CDs, it must be something I am doing, but I admit that the "error code 2" is not helping me figure it out.

Hmmm...at this point I'm leaning towards the two hard drives I tried being bad. I tried a 3rd hard drive and had no problems, with the exact same hardware and install sequence.

this is a known bug caused by mount helpers based on udisks2.
please mount the partition manually then run installer and you should not have a problem.

@brokenman
maybe GUI installer could remount selected partition prior to copying data and launching installer?
that would resolve this issue at least when you perform the installation from GUI.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

I hate to bring this back, but I'm still having problems with this. Same error code '2'. I tried "manually mounting" as you suggested, but either I'm not doing what you suggest correctly (or at the correct time) or it's not making a difference. I thought it was the hard drive that was the problem but I'm encountering it with such a variety of drives that I don't think it is that.

Could it be something about the drive having a GPT instead of FPT? When I try to execute the boot loader install manually, I notice it complains that because it has GPT then fdisk won't work. But I also notice the installer itself uses GParted, so I wouldn't think a GPT would matter.

I've tried blowing everything on the drive away and letting the installer do it all from scratch...still nothing. Everything gets copied to the new drive, but the boot loader won't install.

Was the "fix" mentioned in this thread put into the currently available version of Porteus? If so, I can just download the ISO again.

Thanks.

FYI, I used Parted Magic on a separate bootable CD to clear away everything on the disk and make a new partition table and partition, and now the installer worked. For some reason GParted on the Porteus install wasn't doing the same thing.
