Wi Fi internet connection problem on HP Probook

Hi,

I've looked through all the guides and across many boards but can't seem to find anyone with the same problem as me. I just installed Porteus to a USB and am trying to run it on a HP ProBook 450 G1. My wireless is Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 (which I see in 'Porteus System Info', so I think that means the OS recognizes it).

I can see the Wi-Fi networks available and choose one. However, in connection manager it always reads 'Last used-never' and never seems to actually configure it.

I have tried reinstalling Porteus and have tested it on both my home and work wi fi networks, but no luck.

Hi
--> I can see the Wi-Fi networks available and choose one.<--
So you can connect to, and use, a wifi-network..y/n?

--> Last used-never <--
choose this entry > edit > type in the network name and provide the credentials > save

one question:
do you have porteus configured to save your changes?

Hey donald !
So you can connect to, and use, a wifi-network..y/n?
No, I can see the list of networks. If I choose one, I get the spinning arrows and my mouseover says its "Configuring...". It never actually connects.
choose this entry > edit > type in the network name and provide the credentials > save
Yes I have entered the info, password, deleted and redone, etc. Tried multiple networks (home and work). Ethernet works fine but wireless is a no-go

I don't yet have Porteus configured to save changes because I wanted to see if I could figure it out before doing so. I am pretty beginner and still not so comfortable with terminal commands and like the security of knowing if I screw something up I can boot fresh.

Also if it helps: in my system info I see this repeated a lot:

Hi
I'm sorry, but someone more knowlegeable is needed to solve this.

please generate 'psinfo' report -> upload to pastebin.com -> link here.

and maybe a mod could flag this thread "FAA" to draw attention to it.

Just so the information is here for people from the future browsing this page.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail ... ldID=17045

The support link:
http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/w ... 034398.htm

This page shows that the firmware you need is: iwlwifi-3160
It supports: IntelĀ® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160
This firmware is included in kernel since 3.13+ (we are currently on 3.17+ in Porteus)
I don't yet have Porteus configured to save changes because I wanted to see if I could figure it out before doing so.
Excellent. This is how you troubleshoot. In 'always fresh mode'.

From your logs and info everything hardware related seems to be in order.
As donald said, pplease generate a report from a root console: psinfo
upload to pastebin.com -> link here.

Do this after trying to start the network so we can see this info.

Also please give the output from: ck-list-sessions

Just to be clear. You have tried connecting by clicking on the little network applet in the tray and entering your pass?

Ok here we go:

psinfo: http://pastebin.com/LUdKRWUd
ck-sessions-info: http://pastebin.com/9N8uN2P3

Yes, I tried to connect and was prompted for password. It would intermittently show I was 'Connected' or 'Connecting for a second or two each' but I was never able to access the internet (or at least not in that short of a time period).

I do have to say - booting back and forth between my Windows 7 (to access the internet) and porteus for these logs is making me crazy for the day I don't have to wait through all of Windows sh!t to load..

Everything looks good in your logs. I can't see why the connection is dropping. Perhaps a bad driver. You could try downloading the firmware and driver from the links I provided with the hope that they are newer.

:(

No dice.

Is it possible that HP Client Security or some other Pro tools that came pre-installed are blocking access to the hardware?

I doubt it. Here is what I would try.

First try blacklisting iwlwifi, and see what gets loaded.

Code: Select all

echo "blacklist iwlwifi" >> /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
cp -a --parents /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf /mnt/sdxY/porteus/rootcopy
where xY is the path to your install media. This will put the file in the rootcopy folder to get loaded on the last layer of the live file system.
The iwlwifi kernel module should not get loaded after this.

Check what got loaded after boot with: lspci -k
If nothing takes it place then: modprobe iwlwifi and test connection.

There are some other options you can pass to the kernel driver to help. Many people have the same problem as you. Search this link for: iwlwifi
