Multitasking Provoked USM Corruption Error?

Greetings!

3.1 XFCE 32bit

While trying to use USM to download and modualize the 11meg python-2.7.5.-i486-bundle.xzm and its dependencies to use for Bleachbit, I got a fleething error box stating something about a panel being corrupted and do you want to close it and lose work or something like that but it flickered out before I'd a chance to respond. Right after that when I tried to download python again by USM and it said to open its folder there was a python module inside that said it was 4.1kb in size. Afterwards I tried to download zenity to fix my contextual menu issue ( mv %F $(zenity --file-selection --directory) but it doesn't work) but after the USM processing there was no file at all in the USM folder. I checked by the file manager and it was so. I don't know whether it was because I was also running a video file at the time and maybe USM got pushed out of memory to work but that's never happened to me running programs alongside with videos. I'm wondering whether I should somehow purge my system in case USM mistakenly stashed all those files and modules somewhere else.

Any hints....

I can't think of anything that would cause this. You may be right about the memory. In any case removing the undersized bundle file from /tmp/usm and updating the database should fix it.

I began USM to update all the databases and it proceeded till it got to this:

usm -u all
Starting Slackware database update
Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE
There was a problem downloading the file
EXIT="ok"
sh-4.2#

I restarted and tried to indiviually update alien and salix and the rest but Slackware was no go. USM now starts off by announcing "You are missing required database files!"

I haven't resolved my contextual menu "move to" and Bleachbit issues since I can't download zenity and needed files and won't yet so to not corrupt system.

1) Does this happen in fresh mode?
2) If yes to above then have you at any stage manually deleted the LIBS.TXT file for slackware?
3) If yes to above then perhaps you can try (as root): find /var/usm -type f | xargs rm and then update the database again and make a module from your changes and put it in your modules folder.

No, I didn't delete or tinker at all with USM but was using it as I mentioned the earlier posts. I did the find /var/usm -type f | xargs rm in the terminal and ran USM and got this:

Starting alien database update
Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE
File verification was good.

gzip: /var/usm/alien/LIBS.TXT.gz: not in gzip format

Warning!

One or more errors occured while usm was running:

FATAL ERROR!
usm update_database 259
Could not decompress: LIBS.TXT.gz

You seem to have omitted your answer to question 1.

The LIBS.TXT.gz file is download from sourceforge and is the same file for every user. Obviously if it was not in the gzip format then it wouldn't work for anybody. I can't reproduce this and without doing so can't trouble shoot it myself.

Yes, I did all the steps you requested. I still get "Missing Data Files! You are missing required database files! You can update databases using the update menu" boxes on USM start-up . I reproduced this on another flash drive by updating all USM databases and it appears that the Slackware library is the corrupting issue. Once you update all the databases and get hung up with the Slackware LIB.TXT thing, you can't use USM after that because it won't work on any entry made in the search box. Is there anyway to uninstall and reinstall USM or purge all its files so I can then make a selective update of other databases to avoid Slackware's till they resolve this gz issue? Is there an alternate to using USM in the meanwhile?

Hi Jimwg

Slackware seems to be alright.

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -u slackware
 Starting slackware database update
Downloading: vercheck.txt DONE
Downloading: CHECKSUMS.md5 DONE
Downloading: MANIFEST.bz2 DONE
Downloading: PACKAGES.TXT DONE
Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE
File verification was good.
Optimizing manifest
 slackware database updated.
So, it must be something else that is causing your problem. :unknown:

Let me ask a direct question. Does this occur in 'always fresh mode'?

This is the troubleshooting process. We confirm that the problem does not occur in fresh mode. This narrows down the vectors. Then we can move closer towards the cause.
If the cause is a module then there is no point removing anything manually because the module may overwrite everything. There is also no point waiting for 'them' to fix anything as the LIBS.TXT.gz file is created automatically from one of my scripts on our server. Slackware has nothing to do with it.

If you want to remove everything manually and see if it helps you can:

Code: Select all

rm -rf /etc/usm
rm /usr/man/man8/usm.8.gz
rm -rf /usr/share/usm
rm /usr/share/applications/usm.desktop
rm /usr/bin/{usm*,packagetools}
rm -rf /var/usm
Then reinstall the latest. Please DO NOT do this while using changes=EXIT cheatcode.

Applied:

ode: Select all
rm -rf /etc/usm
rm /usr/man/man8/usm.8.gz
rm -rf /usr/share/usm
rm /usr/share/applications/usm.desktop
rm /usr/bin/{usm*,packagetools}
rm -rf /var/usm

to both normal and Always Fresh modes and erased USM and reinstalled via:

installpkg usm-3.1.7-noarch-1.txz
usm -i
usm -u all

but each time same result:

root@porteus:~# cd Desktop
root@porteus:~/Desktop# installpkg usm-3.1.7-noarch-1.txz
Verifying package usm-3.1.7-noarch-1.txz.
Installing package usm-3.1.7-noarch-1.txz:

Please run: usm -u all

Starting slackware database update
Downloading: CHECKSUMS.md5 DONE
Downloading: MANIFEST.bz2 DONE
Downloading: PACKAGES.TXT DONE

There was a problem downloading the file:

root@porteus:~/Desktop#

Just wondering but could there be some kind of wrong permission somewhere derailing the chain of operations that makes this app go that's doing it? A missing or bad file would've been overwritten by the reinstalls, right?

I was having similar problems. Running 32 bit 3.1 with Chrome and XFCE downloaded a few days ago. Happens with always clean mode as well as default (into XFCE) mode. After a few misleading messages about downloading files (similar regardless as to state of internet connection) I get something along the lines of "LIBS.TXT.gz: not in gz format." To clarify, this happens when I am in fact connected,

Sorry I can't provide more/accurate info, I gave up and made another ISO with KDE (currently facing su/kdesu learning curve, can't test yet).

In jimwg's case it is probably just the slackware repository in the /etc/usm/mirrors-slackware.txt file. Try uncommenting a different repo. When it hapens in fresh mode then I am afraid to say that the problem could be sourceforge. I am looking at options now.

As of this morning everything seems to be fine. Thank you for turning your attention to this issue.
