Curiosity. Which version of Porteus (KDE, LXQt, MATE, XFCE) do you prefer and why?

Hi
First of all, this should be considered IMO..
However, I think it depends on what kind of person you are. how old your PC is and what you are used to.
Are you a minimalist or do you prefer all the "zipp and zapp"
I would be fine with openbox + lxpanel, but this is another story.
Normally I choose XFCE...why?..It's lightweight, highly configurable and I simply like how it looks.
KDE is too much and slow on old PC's
LXQT...never..(I better sit on my hands now.(before I'm going to write what I think about it).
MATE is mostly like Gnome2, if you like it, why not.
But as I said, this is only IMO, you might have a completely different point of view..

I agree almost on all what donald wrote. He is always of good advice.

Generally speaking, the best thing to do would be for you to choose one and stick to it for some time. If you like it enough, familiarity will then do the job. You might even build an intimate relation with the selected desktop environment.

Try one, but also try another, if you have some spare time. There could be fun to hop from one desktop environment to the other. They perform basically the same functions, with different packages. With porteus it is easy to shift from one desktop to the other:

Personally, I was more interested in xfce for a long period, good looking, fast, does the job. Recently, I went with lxqt to have a try. It is still in development. But I think fanthom did a pretty good job to get it functional. However, I am not a connaisseur, as I have played very few with lxde the archetype. Here donald's advice would enlighting.

However, to my surprise, in the last year my preference was for kde.

Find it easiest to change DE by rebooting, but then I always run in always fresh mode.
  • Put all the other desktops (excepting your usual one):
    003-kde.xzm
    003-lxqt.xzm
    003-mate.xzm
    003-xfce.xzm
    in 'porteus/optional' folder.
  • Reboot using kernel params (cheatcodes): noload=<usual DE> load=<other DE>
eg. noload=xfce load=3-lxqt , where here '3-lxqt' uniquely identifies module from others in porteus/optional

I prefer KDE why?

The best applications
Kwrite (best for edit script)
Kdenlive (multi-track video editor)
KolourPaint (paint)
KSnapshot (take snapshot)
Gwenview (image viewer)
best interface management energy, menus, initialization, widgets etc...

I didn't realize I could load the various desktops and switch between them at boot. Thanks. I'll have to try that.

Not only porteus is the fastest Linux os. It is also the one that is the easiest when it comes to switch between desktops. :D
