Ultimately this was the menuentry that worked

Code: Select all

    menuentry "porteus folder dat" {
    set x='/home/d/Downloads/Porteus-LXQt-v3.1-i486.iso'
    loopback loop $x
    linux (loop)/boot/syslinux/vmlinuz from=$x changes=/porteussave
    echo 'changes-ro is example, use any cheatcode you want, see porteus /boot/docs/cheatcodes.txt'
    initrd (loop)/boot/syslinux/initrd.xz
    }
I assume that this is a linux folder?

Openjre should work better.

Use usm package manager gui and try openjre download (the blue square at left of the panel). Have you been using it yet? If not do not forget to update the database.

Or use usm command line:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# usm -u (to update)
root@porteus:~# usm -g openjre
You will find the modules in the /tmp/usm/openjre-7u71_b14/ folder.

Note for usm command line (usm -h will give you the possible commands):
root@porteus:~# usm -g openjre[/code]
The following items were found.

ctrl+c to quit

1) openjre-7u51_b31-x86_64-2gv.txz 3) openjre-7u71_b14-x86_64-1sl.txz
2) openjre-7u71_b14-x86_64-1alien.txz

Thanks. I prefer the terminal method to the software manager method. A lot less tedious.
Unfortunately installing openjre didn't change anything. Java is still unsupported in both browsers. Perhaps there is a setting in the browsers that I can't figure out? Or perhaps I'm supposed to activate java in the system?

Sorry shabido. Here is the explanation, from alien bob for chrome (a slackware genius), but it seems for all platforms:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175508302/
https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.or ... EbgvWE7wMk
The Windows version of Chrome will drop support for NPAPI before the end of 2014. The Linux version was just a bit earlier because the developers did not want to "waste their time" coding NPAPI support for Chrome's new Aura User Interface (introduced with Chrome 35) when it would be dropped later this year anyway.
Eric (alien bob)

Maybe you should try an older version, there is porteus 3.0 (this is version Version 33.0.1750.146):
http://dl.porteus.org/i486/

To do so you should desactivate your actual chrome module and then activate this mentioned above older version. But with an older version there might be security issues.
This seems to be a long shot as you will have then to install jre-8u31-linux.tar.gz. Thus building it from source. :(

Thanks for the info. I guess java aplets are dying. I only need java for one website I visit infrequently and for go on kgs (which only has java apps). Since I use Zorin to connect my old television when watching movies anyways (porteus like ubuntu puts wavy lines on the screen). I tried a couple other browsers like Midori but none of them work with java. I'll just use Zorin for these two cases which is no big deal.

Otherwise, porteus is really great.

Any interesting features I should know about (that don't require an advanced degree in software engineering?)

@shabido:
When you will be familiar enough with it, please provide us with a good critique with pros and cons. We striving to improve porteus. Ans though it does not seem the case, we would like it newcomer proof.

If porteus is running and you have all the necessary software there not much we can add.
Just enjoy the distro. :)

@shabido:

Good and recent news!

I was right about java and chrome, but it seems that the actual firefox version will be running java:
http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/page/2/
... If you want to use Java in a web browser (which supports NPAPI plugins – this excludes Chrome & Chromium but you’ll be OK with all Mozilla [-compatible] browsers) then you’ll have to install my icedtea-web package too...

1) easy solution: use usm gui do download and convert mozilla-firefox-31.4, openjre (or openjdk), rhino and icedtea-web. They will be in the /tmp/usm folder.

2) Or if you prefer working from slackware packages:
- firefox most recent version:
32 bit:
http://pkgs.org/slackware-14.1/salix-i4 ... /download/
64 bit:
http://pkgs.org/slackware-14.1/salix-x8 ... /download/
- Jdk (jre, does not work):
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/openjdk/
rhino dependency:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/rhino/
icedtea:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... edtea-web/

Test java here from within firefox:
http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note: I have tested on my 64 bit installaton. The actual porteus 3.1 version of firefox is not the most recent version, the above mentioned packages need version 31.4.

Maybe something is wrong with our actual firefox version.

Hi shabidoo.

francois asked me to see if I could help you.

I have several websites that I visit that use Java and I struggled initially getting Java to work with Porteus's Firefox. The USM approaches didn't work for me but the one in this thread did: Tip: Build your own Java Oracle module. It creates a module that you store in your porteus/modules folder. I've used it to create a couple of java modules including one for the current 8u31 version of Java.

The process takes a while to run, about 3 or 4 mins, but does work so be patient.

Regarding java

1. Go to https://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp
2. Download Linux or Linux x64 package (I don't know your arch), DON'T TRY RPM packages.
3. Extract somewhere downloaded package AS ROOT (linux filesystem, NTFS could be also but is not enough secure), rename directory to java-oracle (renamed directory should contain true content of package - bin, lib...)
4. open terminal as root and paste all (REPLACE /path/to/java-oracle with your own path):

Code: Select all

x='/path/to/java-oracle'
ln -snf $x/bin/java /usr/bin/java
ln -snf $x/bin/javaws /usr/bin/javaws
ln -snf $x/bin/jcontrol /usr/bin/jcontrol
mkdir -p /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
ln -snf $x/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpjp2-amd64.so
ln -snf $x/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpjp2-i386.so
cp -af  $x/lib/desktop/applications/* /usr/share/applications
cp -af $x/lib/desktop/icons/hicolor/* /usr/share/icons/hicolor
You have mind and feelings. Be wise and clever.

Hi Ed. Thanks for the suggestion. I had already tried this method without success. In the end Tomé's suggestion worked for Firefox. Thanks again
