How to install vlc player and simple screen recorder

Post#1 by azizsaya » 20 Dec 2014, 09:35

Hi, I'm a Linux newbie.
Can you someone help me with the step by step process to install vlc player and simple screen recorder?
I know that we can use USM, but when i search the packages for vlc and their dependencies are analyzed, it come to 76 MBs !!
I'm not convinced about the size and if the right and only the required packages where selected.

Please help, thanks for your help in advance.

Simple screen recorder is already stock in the kde edition. With usm the package manager, vlc is easily built automatically. If you want to run vlc root, just ask for it, we've got the trick. 8)

Hi azizsaya. Don't worry about being a newbie. We all were at one point. I still am.

Using LXQt 64-bit USM shows me a VLC build will be only 36MB and require only 6 dependencies:

aalib
libcaca
libvncserver
samba
vlc
xcb-util-keysyms

What version of Porteus are you using?

Mine just under 36 MB. But don't worry. We all have to start somewhere. You'll get a lot of rubbish you don't need, but at least you'll get somewhere. :)

Code: Select all

usm -g vlc
...
 The following packages are required.
aalib-1.4rc5-i486-5.txz [164K] [not installed]
cups-1.5.4-i486-3.txz [1856K] [not installed]
libaio-0.3.109-i486-1.txz [16K] [not installed]
libcaca-0.99.beta18-i486-2.txz [536K] [not installed]
python-2.7.5-i486-1.txz [11764K] [not installed]
samba-4.1.0-i486-2.txz [9760K] [not installed]
tcl-8.6.1-i486-1.txz [2480K] [not installed]
tk-8.6.1-i486-1.txz [1684K] [not installed]
vlc-2.1.5-i486-1alien.txz [25076K] [installed]

Total size: 53 MB

 Multiple packages were detected.
Would you like to merge the packages into one module? [y/n]
Make the module and be done.
