Install on Qnap Virtualization Station

Hello Porteus community!

First of all, I am a complete noob when it comes to Linux, I don't think I've never run it or any of it's seemingly many variations.
I'll just start with what I want to achieve with this system:
I want to install Porteus as a Virtual Machine (through the so called Virtualization Station) on my newly purchased Qnap HS-251 2G then Install and run NZBdrone on this system 24/7.
First of all: Is this possible?
Secondly... If yes, how hard would it be to set up for a complete newbie like me, and how do I do it?
Which Linux version does Porteus run on?

I hope someone can help me out :)

qnap looks like virtualbox virtual machine. Here are the instructions to install a virtual machine on qnap:
http://www.qnap.com/i/en/trade_teach/co ... ne&cid=103

Grab the porteus iso here (use the xfce iso, it comes with gparted):
http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/current/

I will not decipher the qnap virtual machine for you. I have no qnap installation. But you should be able to boot from into porteus with the iso. Then you need to:
1.0 Format a virtual hdd with gparted the hdd (hard disk partitioner), use ext4 filesystem
2.0 Copy the /boot and /porteus folders of the iso on the newly partitioned hdd
3.0 Now you need to install the bootloader. Go into the /boot folder and double click on the Porteus-installer-for-linux.com file or in a terminal:

Code: Select all

cd /boot
ls
./*-Linux.com
and follow the instructions.

There a video on the installer:

First of all, thank you for the detailed explanation.
I have to admit that I'm a little stuck already, since I just can't figure out which "version" of Linux to choose.
The Virtualization Station gives me lots of options - ( http://imgur.com/sOrYfHu ) from CentOS through Fedora, to Ubuntu, and I just can't seem to figure out to which version Porteus belongs to. (Or if belongs in some other branch)

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I have tried several of them and I never get past the "Bios?"

*edit* further research has shown that it might be based on "Slackware" ? What should I do in this case, since that doesn't show up in the list? Is it just not compatible? :unknown:

Isn`t there a other linux category?

There is a forum for linux and qnap:
http://forum.qnap.com/viewforum.php?f=35

I am sure that they will help you there. Effectively, specifying that porteus is a slack are derivative is a good idea.
