[solved] flash crashing in Firefox, new Porteus 3

Post#1 by MacGuges » 14 Aug 2014, 22:49

Since installing Porteus 3.0 last weekend I've observed that flash in Firefox will crash more often than not. While I can still watch videos or check the weather report, I've observed that any flash will eventually crash after switching to another tab. Of course Firefox has also, frequently, become unresponsive for several seconds at a time. Has anyone else encountered this?

Under the circumstances I consider I ought to switch back to Chrome. But I would like to help the devs here identify the problem, if there isn't something I can do right now to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance!

What graphics card are you using? Also what version of firefox? I have noticed this with previous versions but not so much with the latest version using intel onboard graphics.

lspci reports my card as "NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [GeForce GT 540M] (rev a1)". My X.org version is "X Server 1.14.5". Also, my kernel version is "Linux porteus 3.14.15-porteus #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Aug 3 12:01:20 Local time zone must be set--s x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux"

For me

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 745M] (rev a1)

I do experience this crash in the latest version of firefox too. I can't watch youtube videos. They play for 2 seconds and then restart about 5 times and then it errors out. Will dig deeper tonight.

I think the trouble is either with mesa or the nouveau driver. Unfortunately I can't boot porteus with the nVidia driver to test it. I have a dual graphics card setup and the i915 driver is used upon boot. lspci -k reports that the 3d controller is using nouveau kernel module. No youtube videos at all are watchable.

With handful of apps open, mozilla crashes nouveau. Have to use nvidia driver in my case.

So you suspect the nouveau driver? That's interesting, considering one other thing I changed last weekend besides my Porteus version was my graphics driver. I'll switch back to nVidia now; I'll report whether flash was any more stable tomorrow.

While I was playing around getting the 'bumblebee project' sorted for my system I noticed that after rebuilding libvdpau-0.8 my firefox happily ran youtube videos.

nouveau driver old new problem
I experimented crashes in virtualbox too.
I tested nvidia driver in old pc sempron 1.6GHz and very slow performance in fullscreen, nouveau works better, but crashes few times.

i think it's flash taking advantage of the VDPAU acceleration which does not work reliably for the nouveau driver. VDPAU should work well with nVidia proprietary.

could anyone who is experiencing crashes do a right mouse click on youtube video -> click on 'stats for nerds' -> check if you have 'hardware video decoding' or 'software video decoding' enabled.

thanks

It reports software rendering. Just tested again and compiling libvdpau-0.8 fixes it for me.

i had a plan to bump whole Xorg/OpenGL/GPU acceleration stack in next release anyway so this bug will hopefully be fixed in rc1.

Switching back to the nouveau driver, I found 'software video decoding' when playing youtube videos with Firefox.

I'm now running with the nVidia driver, and flash hasn't crashed (yet) in Firefox.

I've observed that Flash has not been crashing with the nVidia driver. (Please pardon my delay in replying.)
