Hi alka

Some suggestions can be found here.

I prefer (and use myself) clonezilla for this task.

Thank you for the sugestion. I will try the clonezilla. And one more question. How about the mbr section/bootable ability of the device?

An Image of the whole Drive includes the mbr.
If the Drive was bootable when you created the Image, it will be bootable again.

Choosing "Beginner mode" makes it really simple to backup an usb-flash-drive.

and

It looks complicated but isn't.

I was using clonezilla for couple of years, backing up system partition (debian testing/unstable).
When hard drive failed I bought new one, and clonezilla refused to restore on it.
It also failed when I resized partition.
dd is raw and slow but reliable.

In case of Porteus/Slax (frugal install) I dont feel the need to backup the whole thing.
I would only backup my modules and changes (savedat) copying them to safe place (cloud?)
You can anytime quickly fresh 'install' porteus then copy modules/savedat, that's it!

I recommend backing up savedat frequently, and keep it so in case of problem you can go back
(like windows restore point or apple time machine)

if you really want image of the device I would recommend dd (unless it's bigger than 16GB).
