Newbie, got a magic folder to work, no luck with USM RESOLVED

Post#1 by Returnity » 29 Jun 2014, 14:00

Hi, I am new to linux and downloaded the Porteus kde and put on usb drive, after some tinkering and forum search got a save.dat file on my hard drive to save changes like browser add ons and bookmarks for a start. That worked ok, until I updated the USM, it said it was updated but would not run. After deleting the save.dat file and starting again , I made anothe save.dat file and set up my browser again and internet connection as wouldn't want to set these up every time you log in, so this time I thought I would just do a copy of the save.dat file (on hard drive) so I could just replace it if changes were corrupt. So then I tried the USM update on this now fresh boot but with browser set up saved and after a reboot the USM again will not run, it gave an error message but can't remember it..So decided to delete the save.dat file and replace it with the copy of one made after browser set up but before USM update.. Did not work, can not mount file or something..Some what dismayed and lack of knowlege next time I went to a internet cafe I downloaded porteus this time with mate and put that on the usb as well.
So ran porteus mate and wanting browser addons etc saved so not have to piddle around all the time being disconcerted with changes .dat file experience because updates and changes was using payg data allowance, decided to try a magic folder.. After reading the tutorial at least three times I finally understood how the live file system is extracted from the dormant file system and changes made to a live folder are put in the dormant system to extract, so I managed to get changes made to firefox browser to be put in a magic folder. So I can boot and have my browser how I like it now ,not bad for 2 weeks tinkering hey???!!! Got a save.dat container put on hard drive for porteus mate and tried to update the USM , updated, so it said, another 17MB(or so) of data used again. But the USM does not work after the update. No message, nothing...
One other thing I managed was to download Bleachbit so hopefully my .dat container was not just filling up with junk, download ok and just a right click converts it but had a job finding the file to run it due to not knowing much about linux.. Have ordered a couple of cheap second hand books hopefully to help. By the way I could not get bleachbit to work with KDE edition but worked ok with mate edition.
So that is my experience with Porteus over 3 weeks, a lot of head scratching but I still made a donation. The duckduckgo search bar seems to give better results, in the info it was stated that it helps privacy but when made a donation the donation was to a GMAIL account, surely you are aware that yahoo and gmail are the 2 main privacy compromising accounts for mail sent to or from them...I use a Safe-mail.net account , maybe you could check them out
SO now I need help with the USM as it does not work and have no idea of how to proceed with it....

thanks

ww

Hi Returnity, welcome to Porteus.

How big did you make your save.dat file? Mine is 256MB.

In terminal mode enter:

su
toor
then the command usm -v

and post the results.

Go here:http://sourceforge.net/projects/usm/files/, download any last modified usm-package, install and try again.

when you are saving changes and some usm files are deleted already then it's better to run 'installpkg usm-3.1.2-noarch-1.txz' than 'activate usm-3.1.2-noarch-1.xzm' to get rid of existing aufs whiteout files.

Hi again, I reeboot and try to run usm from gui and no response again

not really knowing what I am doing I go to the download folder , the usm file is still there so changes.dat file worked and now I installed it again and it said missing database files and I would have to update them all again ???

Would it be better to have a magic folder for the usm updates? if so what would the source and target directories be?

thx again

USM is spread between various folders in /etc, /usr and /var so magic folders makes no sense in this case (too many directories to pair).
please do a fresh installation, create new save.dat and use 'changes=your_save.dat' cheatcode instead of magic folders.

Hi,

Being new to linux, I managed to get a magic folder to work for my browser set up , so just wondered if it was possible to do similar for USM as this would seperate possible corrupt changes,

I am not using a magic folder for usm , I was asking if it would be better to , but you have pointed out that it would not be.

changes are saved in save.dat file as shown above a couple of posts ago, I have done 3 or 4 fresh installations

??? thx

USM does not use a single directory/folder. The update script shown in this post shows you the directory/folders involved.

# http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... 697#p24697

And the use of the script may solve the update problem for you. If not there are other steps that can be done. Don't give up.

Hi ,

showing my ignorance,,, I can copy the script to a file called update-usm.sh it then says run it....how do you run the file?, I tried typing the file name from within the directory it was in.

root@porteus:~/Downloads# update-usm
bash: update-usm: command not found

I also put the script in file called usm-update and did

root@porteus:~/Downloads# chmod +x usm-update
root@porteus:~/Downloads#

no error message but did not do anything

if I download a fresh .iso will that make any difference?
thx

Don't feel bad, I was where you are not that long ago. And ain't much further either. :D
Try running the file with: sh update-usm.sh
I also put the script in file called usm-update and did

root@porteus:~/Downloads# chmod +x usm-update
root@porteus:~/Downloads#

no error message but did not do anything
chmod made the file a script, then you have to run it. Enter usm-update.

Unlikely.

Are you booting the ISO?

Hi again,

Try running the file with: sh update-usm.sh did this and it uninstalled then reinstalled usm

after usm -v told to update

update was ok

root@porteus:~/Downloads# usm -v

You are using USM version: 3.1.2

going to reboot now

rebooted and it is not working again, the changes file worked because the update-usm.sh file got saved..

Regarding .iso , I download a iso from a internet cafe and make bootable usb with it using YUMI

so is this problem with my save.dat file getting corrupted or what?

I will have to have a porteus distro that does not use USM :wall:

thx
