I'm booting Porteus from a USB drive and using a persistence file (.dat). I guess what I'm looking for is a way to encrypt the drive so that you'd have to enter a password to start the boot process. I'm pretty ignorant about how to do this. I don't know if you can set this up in Porteus, or if you would have to wrap Porteus up in some kind of an encrypted boot loader.

A quick search showed that boot loaders, (syslinux, grub) can be password protected. I would go with encrypted save.dat.

Use porteus save file manager
choose the option ( I want to encrypt a savefile) and ecncrypt your .dat (savefile)
