Does Porteus allow a dialup internet connection

Post#1 by jacatone » 11 Apr 2014, 02:23

I'm a refurbisher for a local charity and we recently got a truck load of older Dell Dimension P4 computers running XP. Since we can't reinstall XP, Porteus looks like it might work as a replacement OS, but it has to be able to connect to the internet through a 56k hardware modem or external serial model. Is this possible and if so how? Thanks.

This is old information, but who knows:
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=25
11) I am on dialup, is my modem supported under Linux/Slax?
(Tonio)

To get your dialup modem online:
# Download the scanModem.gz tool from the LinModems Resource Page:
http://132.68.73.235/linmodems/packages/scanModem.gz
# Read the manual "first.html" on:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/first.html
# Execute these commands in the command line.
# unpack the downloaded "scanModem.gz" file
# gunzip scanModem.gz
# make the scanModem file executable executable
# chmod +x scanModem
# execute the "scanModem" file
# ./scanModem

Now you should have a folder "/Modem" which contains the file "ModemData.txt" and some files.
Send the "ModemData.txt" file to the linmodems group or to me, Tonio. I will try to help.

If your modem is supported I will try to make a module for you in case that it does not exist.
If it is a "hsf/hcf" modem, I will recommend the_greek's modules :)
Otherwise you need a complicated driver that is not yet build for slax.
Users are recommended to read the "InfoGeneral.txt" file in the "/Modem" folder.

For more information about dialup modems, take a look at the following page(s):
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/

There are also several pages at the Slax forum:
