[SOLVED] How can I put various browsers in Application Menu?

Post#1 by Obosan » 08 Apr 2014, 16:51

This is my first time to use Linux.
I compared with multiple distributions and finally
I decided to use Porteus xfce v2.1.
Thank you for creating such a nice portable Linux.
It is very fast and works fine out of the box.

I need to use various browsers with Porteus,
so I put 04-firefox.xzm, 04-chrome.xzm and 04-opera.xzm
into the folder (/porteus/base/), but I can only see Opera icon
on Launcher and in the Internet section of Application Menu.
Firefox and Chrome disappear.
When I input "Firefox" on Application Finder, Firefox works,
but Chrome doesn't.

My questions are as follows:
1. Does Porteus allow to use one browser only?
2. Should I be better to put 04-files in the folder (./modules)?
3. How can I add Firefox icon on Launcher in place of Opera?
4. Why Chrome doesn't work?

Thank you for your time and kind attention.

Wekcome to porteus forum.

1. Does Porteus allow to use one browser only?
No you can use all of them.
2. Should I be better to put 04-files in the folder (./modules)?
I do not think that this make any difference.
3. How can I add Firefox icon on Launcher in place of Opera?
This depends on your desktop environment. I will have a look at it and come back, however you can look on internet adding application on xfce panel (google is your friend).
4. Why Chrome doesn't work?
If you are in root mode, this might be the reason. Is it your case? If this is the case there is a solution.

Bonjour francois! Thanks for your prompt reply.

On the right side of panel, I see "guest", therefore
I don't think I am in root mode. Am I correct ?

Do you know why those browsers icon are not in
Application Menu if I can use all of them?

Regarding 3. How can I add Firefox icon on Launcher in place of Opera?,
I googled as you suggested and found a solution. Here is what I have done,

I right clicked on Opera icon to see Properties, and then open it.
By creating New Item of Launcher, I typed name and comment: firefox,
command: /usr/bin/firefox icon: firefox-3.5

Now, I can launch firefox and opera simultaneously.

Thank you for your kind suggestion.

This means that you are in normal user mode. Google chrome should work out of the box. Where did you pickup your google chome brower from? Did you used this one?(sometimes people mix up the 32bit and 64bit applications):
http://ponce.cc/porteus/i486/current/modules/

Please give us the output with terminal of:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~/Downloads# /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome
Created new window in existing browser session.
root@porteus:~/Downloads#
Do you know why those browsers icon are not in
Application Menu if I can use all of them?

If you have put the modules in the /porteus/modules folder, as soon as they are loaded there should be automatically an entry installed in the application menuy. I am very surprised.

Any reason you are not using the latest version? You may find many problems using modules from v3.0 with your v2.1 xfce. I recommend updating. To answer some of your questions:

1. Does Porteus allow to use one browser only?
No

2. Should I be better to put 04-files in the folder (./modules)?
Yes. They will all be loaded (at every boot) if you put them here.

3. How can I add Firefox icon on Launcher in place of Opera?

The icon on the panel is controlled by /usr/share/applications/browser.desktop
Rename the browser that you want an icon on the panel to 99-firefox.xzm. This will force it to be loaded last and it's .desktop file will take precedence, making it appear on the panel.

4. Why Chrome doesn't work?

It does work. Where did you get the module from? It's dependencies are cups and GConf.

I got 04-chrome.xzm from http://dl.porteus.org/i486/current/modules/

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~/Downloads# /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome
[2896:2896:0409/125141:ERROR:chrome_browser_main_extra_parts_gtk.cc(51)] Startup refusing to run as root.
root@porteus:~/Downloads#

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ cd Downloads
guest@porteus:~/Downloads$ /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome
[2906:2927:0409/130404:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(627)] Failed to get name owner. Got org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Could not get owner of name 'org.chromium.Mtpd': no such name
[2906:2927:0409/130404:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(627)] Failed to get name owner. Got org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Could not get owner of name 'org.chromium.Mtpd': no such name

guest@porteus:~/Downloads$
as soon as they are loaded there should be automatically an entry installed in the application menu
That's what I expected and what it should be. This is the reason why I wrote the question.
I am surprised too.

Thank you for your help!

Bom dia! brokenman :D

Any reason you are not using the latest version?
Before using Porteus in Flash Drive I tried v3.0 LXDE and xfce CD-ROM too, but they didn't open and work. I thought this is due to my computer's specification or something.
After clicking Always fresh mode, monitor of my laptop was blinking and returned to Login: (first explanation page of starting sequence). So I decided to use Porteus v2.1.

My first three questions are solved with help and kind support of you and francois.

google-chrome
You need to do is to modify the last line (line 42) of the file /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome:
from:

Code: Select all

exec -a "$0" "$HERE/chrome" "$@"
to:

Code: Select all

exec -a "$0" "$HERE/chrome" "$@" --user-data-dir

Bonjour, francois!

google-chrome:

I modified the file /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome and added --user-data-dir.
After reboot, chrome opened! Bravo!
I shall give you the output of Terminal Emulator as follows:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~/Downloads# /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome
[2557:2578:0409/232311:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(627)] Failed to get name owner. Got org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Could not get owner of name 'org.chromium.Mtpd': no such name

I can't see firefox and chrome in Application Menu yet, but I can launch all three of them from Launcher at this moment.

Merci mille fois, francois! :Bravo:

Having solved the Problem booting to GUI caused by SiS VGA,
I started to use version 3 in place of v.2.1.

All three browsers work fine and automatically installed in the
Application Menu of v.3.0 xfce.

So my questions on the subject are all solved. Thanks a lot!

Now I am so happy to use Porteus as my main operating system,
because members of this forum helped me a lot in every way and
I like the simplicity and clean look of Porteus.
